SummaCare plans rank highest in Ohio

Several health insurers in Ohio recently were named as among the nation's top 100 for Medicare managed-care, Medicaid managed-care and commercial (employer-sponsored) health plans by the magazine U.S. News & World Report.

Akron-based SummaCare Inc. was the highest-ranked insurer in Ohio for its Medicare and commercial plans, which ranked 61st and 30th, consecutively.

Open enrollment starts Saturday for Medicare managed-care plans. SummaCare has three options next year, with monthly premiums ranging from $0 to $175.

Other insurers in Ohio to make the list include: Anthem, 57th for Medicare managed-care and 62nd for commercial; Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Ohio, 35th for Medicare managed-care; the Health Plan of the Upper Ohio Valley, 44th for Medicare managed-care; Paramount, 36th for Medicaid managed-care, 48th for Medicare managed-care and 90th for commercial; Buckeye Community Health Plan, 60th for Medicaid managed-care; Medical Mutual of Ohio, 96th for commercial; and Cigna HealthCare of Ohio, 98th for commercial.

The rankings were based on customer experience, preventive services, how well the plan cares for people with chronic illnesses and accreditation scores by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
