Outpatient medical center will be built on Route 18

Summa Health System teamed up with Medina-area doctors on Monday to officially break ground for a 100,000-square-foot outpatient medical center on state Route 18 in Montville Township.
Signet Enterprises LLC of Akron is developing the project and will own the facility, to be known as the Health Center at Lake Medina.
The center then will be leased under a long-term deal by Summa and the NorthEast Ohio Management Service Organization, a group of about 75 doctors from Medina and surrounding communities.
The partners also have secured 20 adjacent acres for future expansion to serve the medical needs of the growing Medina County area, said Thomas J. Strauss, Summa's president and chief executive.
''We're excited about the opportunity to stabilize the market with new services and enhancements,'' Strauss said. '' . . . There are no plans at this time to construct a hospital. Who knows in the future? We just continue to look at ways to enhance the services there.''
The planned outpatient medical facility is about a mile away from Medina General Hospital, which is in talks with the Cleveland Clinic about a possible affiliation deal.
''Our mission is to continue to
serve the patients of Medina County and we are working with the physicians on our medical staff to accomplish that,'' Medina General President and Chief Executive Gary Hallman said Monday in a statement.
The new outpatient building will include a two-suite, same-day surgery center, which will be jointly owned by Summa and Medina-area surgeons, said Dr. John M. Surso, president and board chair of the doctor group.
When it opens in spring 2010, the medical complex also will include mammography, CAT scans, MRI, ultrasound, bone-density testing, lab services and physical and occupational therapy, all of which will be operated by Summa.
The center also will offer on-site cancer therapy services, including radiation therapy — something that's not currently available in the immediate Medina area, Surso said.
''It will be all-things-outpatient that folks can access easily and efficiently,'' he said. ''They won't need to go elsewhere.''
In addition, the project includes several primary-care and specialty physician offices.
Anthony S. Manna, principal chair and chief executive of Signet, declined to release the cost of the project.
Despite the ongoing crisis in the credit market, Manna said he's confident ''we will have the financing in place.''
Signet also developed the recently opened cancer center on Summa's Akron City Hospital campus, as well as a new psychiatric hospital that is opening soon in Alabama.
''We've been working with a number of banks, and we have a pretty good track record,'' he said.
