Hyundai shows off hybrid system at L.A. auto show

From Beacon Journal wire services

Korean automaker Hyundai brought its ''Blue Drive'' sustainability campaign to the Los Angeles Auto Show, a program that includes proprietary fuel-cell technology and a lithium polymer battery.

The battery — which is large, flat and thin as opposed to small, round and chunky — takes up less space, has a longer life and is safer than other types, said John Krafcik, vice president of product development and strategic planning for Hyundai Motor America.

The company also unveiled its HED-5 ''i-Mode'' concept vehicle, which features a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with state-of-the-art gasoline direct injection.
