Company executive to fill vacancy created by Clapp's death
Published on Wednesday, Jan 14, 2009
Beacon Journal staff report
Medical Mutual of Ohio has named a longtime company executive to fill the leadership vacancy left by the death last month of President and Chief Executive Kent W. Clapp in a plane crash.
The insurance company announced Tuesday that Rick Chiricosta will take over as president and chief executive of Medical Mutual, effective Feb. 1.
Chiricosta is president of the Life Group for Consumers Life Insurance Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Medical Mutual.
He also has been Medical Mutual's executive vice president for mergers and acquisitions.
''I am thrilled with the board's unanimous endorsement and ready to continue the fine legacy of Kent Clapp in driving our family of companies forward,'' Chiricosta said. ''I have always been impressed with the dedication and hard work of our employees and I am eager to lead them to meet the business challenges ahead.''
Clapp died Dec. 3 in a plane crash in Puerto Rico with his fiancee, Tracy Turner.
Charles A. Bryan, a retired Nationwide Insurance Co. executive, has been Medical Mutual's acting chief executive.
Chiricosta joined Cleveland-based Medical Mutual in 1986, serving as controller of the insurer's western division.
From 1989 to 1998, he was chief financial officer for Medical Life Insurance Co., then a wholly owned subsidiary of Medical Mutual.
After leaving the insurance company in 1998 to work as a vice president and chief financial officer for National Interstate Corp., he returned to Medical Mutual in 1999 as vice president of finance.
Medical Mutual is the second-largest insurer in the state, with about 1.6 million enrollees.
