2 Akron development projects, 1 in Stark recognized

BioInnovation Institute, Bridgestone, Hoover redevelopments picked by Team NEO

By Beacon Journal staff

Updated at 2:26 p.m.

Akron's BioInnovation Institute and a partnership that worked to keep Bridgestone in Akron were among economic development projects recognized at the annual Team NEO Economic Impact Awards dinner Tuesday night.

Team NEO, formed by area chambers to work on attracting businesses to the 16-county region, spotlighted efforts to retain companies, create jobs and bring foreign investment to the region in 2008.

''It's a tribute to a large team of individuals and organizations working every day to create jobs in our community,'' Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic said of his city's role in two first-place awards.

The BioInnovation Institute, which won the Asset Creation category, was created last year to position Akron as a leader in biomaterials. Project partners are the city of Akron, Summa Health System, Akron General Health System, Akron Children's Hospital, BioEnterprise, the Knight Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, Summit County and the University of Akron.

The Business Retention award went to the partners who contributed to a business incentive package for Bridgestone — a $100 million project that will retain 1,000 jobs. Project partners are the city of Akron, Summit County, the Greater Akron Chamber, and the Summit County Port Authority.

Also winning an award, in the category of Public-Private Partnership, was the Hoover Redevelopment effort in North Canton. Partners are Maple Street Commerce, the city of North Canton and the Stark Development Board.

The project took a 125,000-square-foot plant that once pumped out Hoover vacuums and redeveloped it for new industrial tenants.

More than 60 applications from 10 counties were received for Team NEO's third annual celebration.

''In 2008, there were 6,000 new jobs added and more than $1.2 billion invested in the Cleveland Plus region,'' Team NEO chief Tom Waltermire said.

''It is important to celebrate the 'wins' that are helping to diversify and advance our economy, and it is critical that the region honor the unsung heroes — the economic developers, communities, and nonprofit organizations — who fight daily to make progress,'' he said.

Several other local initiatives were among the finalists. They include:

• Asset Creation category: The bioscience research and business park at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC). Partners are the Wayne Economic Development Council, OARDC and the city of Wooster.

• Business Expansion category: Friction Products, city of Medina.

• Fostering Entrepreneurship category: Akron Global Business Accelerator.
