May unemployment goes to 10.8%. Analyst predicts 12% in July
Published on Saturday, Jun 20, 2009
From staff and wire reports
Ohio's unemployment rate continued to climb above 10 percent in May and likely will go still higher in the next couple of months.
The state jobless rate of 10.8 percent for May was Ohio's highest in more than a quarter of a century, according to figures released Friday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
The latest figures put Ohio among the top 10 states with the worst unemployment rates.
A year ago, the state rate was 6.3 percent. The last time the state's unemployment rate was higher than 10.8 was when it hit 10.9 percent in October 1983. The jobless rate was 10.2 percent in April.
''Chances are this is not the end of the line,'' said economist Ken Mayland, president of ClearView Economics in Pepper Pike. ''We haven't seen the peak
yet.''
Mayland said the unemployment rate, while difficult to predict, could peak at about 12 percent in July before starting to decline.
The national unemployment rate for May was 9.4 percent, up from 8.9 percent in April.
Unemployment rose as workers re-entered Ohio's labor market and many were unable to find jobs, said ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin.
Officials say Ohio had 646,000 unemployed workers last month, up from 609,000 in April.
Ohio has lost 26,000 jobs during the first two months of the second quarter of 2009, said George Zeller, a Cleveland-based economic research analyst.
These latest figures also mean that during the last 17 months, Ohio has lost 286,000 jobs, or 5.3 percent of the jobs that the state had at the end of 2007, he said in a report sent out Friday.
The state has gone 13 years and three months with its job growth continuously below the U.S. national average, Zeller wrote.
Ohio's non-farm wage and salary employment decreased 200 over the month, going from 5,132,900 in April to 5,132,700 in May.
Ohio manufacturing losses outweighed job gains in the service industry, according to the state figures.
Those state figures showed:
• Jobs in goods-producing industries fell 15,600 to 816,000. A decline of 17,400 in durable goods was partially offset by a gain of 1,300 in nondurable goods, lowering manufacturing employment by 16,100.
• Construction jobs rose 400, while mining and logging jobs were up 100.
• Jobs in service-providing industries rose 15,400 to 4,316,700.
• The largest service increases occurred in educational and health services, up 8,400, and in leisure and hospitality, up 2,200.
• Financial activities jobs were up 1,800. Also, trade, transportation, and utilities jobs rose 1,600. Professional and business services jobs were up 1,500, with other services up 400 and information up 100.
• Government jobs fell 600 as a decrease in federal government was mostly offset by growth in state and local government.
With the loss of 16,100 manufacturing jobs in May, Ohio's manufacturing sector has lost 124,400 jobs, or 16.7 percent of the sector's jobs from May 2008, Zeller said his analysis shows.
Manufacturing losses will continue in Ohio with the latest General Motors layoffs and related ripple effects at other companies, said Mayland.

Some of the rise in unemployment is because Ohio allows "at will employment" & employers can fire anyone for any reason unless it involves discrimination or it is a contract position. Also, employers do NOT have to prove anything, the employee DOES, and if the employee CAN NOT prove the employer wrong then NO UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS WILL BE PAID TO THE EMPLOYEE.
At will employment is still better than being beholden to a union.
I've had a union job..they are not all that they
are cracked up to be.. never there when you..need them..
we need more employment in this city..
who ever is going to be major needs to bring in
MORE EMPLOYMENT for all of the people of Akron..
sellin' crack on the corner doesn't count as a job..
Employers can fire anyone for any reason unless it involves discrimination
As an employer I ask whats wrong with that ???
Is'nt MY money paying you to begin with ?
If I dont like you or don't think your doing the job as I would like YOUR FIRED
If you don't like it start your own company and KEEP EVERYONE you hire regardless !
In other words Do your Job and be Respectful and you'll have NOTHING to worry about --- EVER
Unions Nowdays are about lining someones pockets at YOUR expense --- look at what some of the union leaders make and there style of living
LOTS better then the average Joe the Union Man
YOUR Money IS paying them rather they help YOU OR not
at will employment has long been in existence here...it is NOT contributing to this new RISING unemployment that is spiraling out of control.
try again.
Government Officials awarding businesses Stockholders (money marketers) property tax abatement, tax incentives, tax credit, tax refund, tax exemption, with the audacity to move business into enterprise zone in the USA, Mexico, Canada, China, Kenya, and etc. To enable businesses Stockholders to market more stock dividends (money) quarterly in the wholesale and retail price of their product and service.
Leaves workers, consumers, taxpayers, jobless, indigent, homeless, and without a means to love, nurse, nurture, discipline, protect, and provide for EVERY child (job) they conceived!
In regards to lucy1224...reference "At will employers",you're correct. I was actually fired from employment by a county(Crawford) employer(sheriff).I did absolutely nothing wrong. A female co-worker did not like me, and they fired me. The sheriff made up reasons why I was fired. When I tried to claim unemployment benefits I was denied. I appealed and took it to arbitration, and proved the sheriff falsified reasons why I was terminated.County money wasted...he had attourneys and I went up against him myself.I KNEW the truth! I did receive unemployment, after I took it to arbitration and proved that he falsified information. Perjury by a public official...So "at will employment" is wrong if you falsify information.I guess he should have just said "she was fired for NO REASON" instead of making up lies. Then they wouldn't have had to pay for an attourney or unemployment benefits. So...if you are released from an "at will employment" and falsify reasons that you were let go...NAIL THEM!!
