Q: I have inherited a vehicle from my uncle, and I don't know very much about it. My brother suggested I check and see if there have been any safety recalls on it. Can you tell me how I go about this? The vehicle is a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder.
A: Go to the Web site http://www.Recalls.gov, which, incidentally, lets you check for recalls for everything from boats to prescription medication.
In your case, click on ''motor vehicles,'' and follow the instructions. You will find that there are four recalls for your Pathfinder.
Only two of them, though, are from the manufacturer, one for steering gear lubricant that might bind at extremely low temperatures, the other for too-thick carpet padding that could get in the way of the brake pedal.
The other two recalls are for exterior lights that were sold as replacement units, and only affect customers who replaced lights with those brands.
Bottom line: Your inheritance looks like a pretty trouble-free vehicle from a recall standpoint.
