A. Schulman reports
third-quarter results
Resin maker and compounder A. Schulman Inc. (Nasdaq: SHLM) reported net income for its third quarter ending May 31 of $7.4 million, or 29 cents per share, up 4.2 percent from $7.1 million, or 26 cents per share, a year ago.
But sales and profitability results remained well below 2008 pre-recessionary levels, the Fairlawn company reported late Tuesday.
Quarterly profits rose because of cost-reduction efforts and a favorable product line mix, as net sales for the fiscal third quarter were $297.7 million, down 41.8 percent from $511.8 million a year ago.
The company said it maintained strong liquidity with cash at $202.5 million compared with $141.3 million at the end of the second quarter this year.
Executives have scheduled a Webcast conference call with investors for 11 a.m. today. The call can be accessed at http://www.aschulman.com.

Lockheed Martin
can build tower
Lockheed Martin will build a new, 97-foot-high optical test tower on city-owned land at Derby Downs.
The Akron City Council voted Monday to allow the company to build the tower.
Jim Mascolino, a senior manager for Lockheed Martin, said the company has been using the shorter, former FAA tower at Derby Downs on George Washington Boulevard to conduct different optical tests. He said the new tower will have more space and better access for employees.
The updated tower is expected to help the company attract additional and larger commercial clients.
The tower will be 350 feet from residential homes and the company's testing is expected to be intermittent and not cause disruptions.
No concerns were raised about the new tower during two public hearings the council held Monday.
