Awards will be presented to 30 young professionals

By Paula Schleis
Beacon Journal business writer

Awards are typically given to highlight a past accomplishment.

But tonight, the Greater Akron Chamber will honor a slate of young professionals not only for what they've done, but also for their still-untapped potential.

A gala at the Akron Civic Theatre tonight will celebrate ''30 for the Future,'' an event extolling the power and promise of business and community leaders who have yet to reach their 40th birthday.

Event organizer Rebecca Guzy Woodford, the chamber's vice president of communications, said the awards were launched three years ago after a consultant said the area needed to do more to attract and retain young professionals.

''So we said let's recognize what our young leaders are doing and encourage them to become even more involved in the community and stay here,'' Guzy Woodford said.

''Usually at awards programs, you're seeing the same high-level CEOs achieving great things, but there are lots of young people achieving great things, too,'' she said.

A seven-member committee considered 80 nominees from Summit, Portage and Medina counties, representing sectors that included health care, technology, manufacturing, retail, social service and education.

This year's recipients are:

Cara Adams, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations.

Kate Bradley, Brouse McDowell.

Nathan Brant, Akron Area YMCA.

Anthony Burwell, Summa Foundation.

Dr. Jennifer Eiko Cummings, Akron General Medical Center.

Angela Freeman, Cole Industries.

Stacey Gardner-Buckshaw, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio.
