Giant Eagle at Chapel Hill to grow

By Betty Lin-Fisher
Beacon Journal staff writer

Demolition crews have finished tearing down a portion of the Plaza at Chapel Hill strip mall to make way for an expansion of the Giant Eagle grocery store.

Crews tore down approximately 15,000 square feet of the strip mall — a space that used to be occupied by Jo-Ann Stores — to gain space for the grocer that anchors the western end of the plaza.

Giant Eagle officials confirmed plans for an expansion to the Howe Avenue store and said construction is to begin next summer. Officials would not release any other information.

According to plans filed with the city of Akron (the store is mostly in Akron, including the expanded part, but also partially in Cuyahoga Falls) and the company that owns the buildings, Giant Eagle plans to add about 30,000 square feet to its 60,000 square-foot store.

The new 90,000-square-foot store will be remodeled inside, said Mark Schroeder, vice president of leasing for Pepper-Pike-based Visconsi Cos., which developed the strip mall in 1986 and still owns it.

''We're very pleased that Giant Eagle has decided to [expand and renovate],'' Schroeder said. ''It shows their confidence in the location. This will be one of their larger stores in all of Northeast Ohio.''

The expansion of the Giant Eagle will take up the void made by the demolition and go right up to the wall of the next tenant, Party City, Schroeder said.

Schroeder said the strip mall has one vacancy in the former Marshall's location. There are two unidentified national retailers looking at that 25,000-square-foot site, he said.

The low vacancy rate ''in this day and age, speaks to the strength of the market and the project that we've been able to keep it together,'' Schroeder said.

Giant Eagle, based in Pittsburgh, has two other renovations and projects ongoing elsewhere in the area.

In Rootstown, the store on state Route 44 began a remodeling project in June and should be completed by the end of the year. The most noticeable changes, said Giant Eagle spokesman Dan Donovan, will be an expanded pharmacy and a new liquor agency.

In Medina, demolition has occurred to make way for a Giant Eagle expansion on North Court Street.

Company officials said the grocer hopes to have the remodeling done late next year. About 30,000 square feet will be added, which will include a drive-through pharmacy, dry cleaners, expanded meat and seafood sections and an expanded natural and organic department.
