Training focus is on hybrids

Firefighters learn to respond to blazes involving vehicles at session in Kent

 

Firefighters face unique risks when they respond to crashes and fires involving hybrid vehicles which run on battery-powered motors as well as gasoline engines. The larger battery packs, for instance, can create dangerous shock wires can carry as much as 600 volts and other hazards.

Toyota, which makes the popular hybrid Prius and other hybrid vehicles, held a special training session for Portage County firefighters on how to respond to an emergency involving hybrid vehicles. Tuesday's program took place at the Kent Fire Department.

The training explained the differences among various hybrid vehicles. Instructors came from Don Joseph Toyota of Kent and Stark State College's automotive technology program.
