Renovation and construction workers have been busy at two area Acme Fresh Markets.
The Akron-based family-owned grocer is building its first new store in 20 years in Green at the Heritage Crossings of Green development at Massillon and Graybill roads.
It is also 95 percent done with a $3 million renovation and expansion of its Acme store in Montrose on Medina Road, state Route 18, in Bath Township.
Nearly all parts of the Montrose store received an update, including relocating several departments.
The store gained 10,000 square feet from its neighbor, Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts, when that store changed its format to a more compact model.
“We’re so excited,” Acme Vice President Jim Trout said. “The feedback from the customers has been outstanding. I believe we’ve got a great renovation and a great $3 million investment into that community.”
In recent weeks, a new bakery opened at the front of the store. While bakers still work toward the back, the new area features cake decorators and fresh-made goods. A Charter One bank branch also relocated within the store.
Other departments that expanded or relocated included bulk foods, the seafood case and a larger adult-beverage area. The store is one of a limited number with a full state liquor permit and already features a growler station with beers on tap.
The expanded store includes an event room available for use by community and nonprofit groups and for wine and beer tastings and food samplings, Trout said. Organizers can contact the store manager for reservations.
The remainder of the renovation work on the 103,000-square-foot-store will be done after the new year.
“The only thing we’re going to take a break on because of the busy holiday season is we will finish deli and prepared foods after the first of the year,” he said.
The rest of the Montrose Acme Plaza this year completed a $1.5 million upgrade, including new facades on other store fronts and reconfiguring the Acme parking lot by its owner, Albrecht Inc.
Joe Albrecht, vice president of retail properties for Albrecht Inc., said he has one remaining space — a 1,270 square foot store — before the project is 100 percent occupied.
In Green, the foundation is in, the metal structure is in place and the roof has been added.
That location will be a 75,500-square-foot store at a cost of $10 million. It is scheduled to be open by summer, Trout said.
It is being built down the street from a recently renovated and expanded Giant Eagle location that has been converted to what the Pittsburgh-based grocer calls its Market District concept on Corporate Woods Parkway.
At Heritage Crossings, the Acme store will be the anchor, but Albrecht said he has leased four of the five spaces called “end caps.”
“We’re ahead of schedule,” he said.
Albrecht said he could not disclose the tenants, but said four of the five are food-based businesses or restaurants and a mix of national chains and local ventures. The majority have a sit-down feature of some sort, he said.
For the retail locations, “we’ve got some good retailers and good service providers,” he said.
There is about 30,000-plus square feet of small shop space. Albrecht said the number of tenants will depend on space requests.
“I think there’s going to be 11 to 14 additional tenants,” he said.
Acme construction is first, with three outlot structures coming, Albrecht said.
The schedule is for the Acme to open in May, Albrecht said, and the smaller buildings in June or July.
Other renovations in Acme’s future include Acme No. 1 in West Akron off West Market Street and Acme No. 19 on Whipple Avenue Northwest in Jackson Township.
Trout also said Acme is still “committed to opening a store in Medina, but there’s no date yet.”
