Davey Tree expands with new small offices

Beacon Journal staff report

The Davey Tree Expert Co. of Kent, one of the largest employee-owned companies in the country, is continuing to grow across the United States, opening seven new branch offices in the first quarter of this year.

Davey, a shrub, tree and lawn-care business, said the offices employ about 60. Some are new and others were existing Davey employees who were reassigned.

The move comes as Davey also continues to grow through acquisitions. Last month, the company said it had acquired the Cortese Tree Specialists of Knoxville, Tenn. In January, the company reported it had acquired Maier Forest and Tree in Rochester, Minn., and Superior NW Tree & Shrub Care in Seattle.

Davey picked up about 50 employees with the addition of the three operations.

The additional branch offices are in Austin; Baltimore; Chicago; Detroit; Napa, Calif.; Pittsburgh; and St. Louis.

Davey has more than 7,000 employees throughout North America, including about 500 in Northeast Ohio.

Last fall, the National Center for Employee Ownership ranked Davey as the fifth-largest, 100 percent employee-owned company in the United States.
