The Dollar General in Akron’s Merriman Valley is moving, but it isn’t going far.
The store, which leases space at 1770 Merriman Road, plans to have a new building constructed three lots down, at 1730 Merriman, where a former deli will be razed.
Jeff Paulson, the civil engineer designing the new store, said it will be larger than the current one, going from 6,500 square feet to 9,100.
“We’ve outgrown that space,” he said of the current store.
Akron City Council approved plans this week for the discount store. Councilwoman Marilyn Keith, who represents Ward 8 that includes Merriman Valley, said the store will be preferable to the dilapidated building on the site.
This will be the latest of several new Dollar General stores built in Akron in the past two years. Council previously approved plans for stores on East Waterloo Road, Brown Street, Copley Road and Mogadore Road.
The new Merriman Valley store will include 30 parking spaces rather than the 36 the city normally would require for a store of this size.
Store officials gathered data, however, that showed the smaller number of spaces would be sufficient to serve customers.
The store is similar in size to the Mogadore Road, Brown Street and East Waterloo Road locations that have a like number of spaces, said Mike Antenucci, Akron’s zoning manager.
Dollar General’s lease for its current Merriman Valley store expires at the end of the year. The property’s owner is looking for a new tenant.
Paulson said the deli building is expected to be demolished by midsummer, with construction on the store starting right afterward.
