The recent moves of some bank branch offices in Fairlawn were precipitated by FirstMerit’s closure of the former Citizens Bank branch on Smith Road.
On Oct. 18, FirstMerit closed six Citizens branches in Northeast Ohio because of their proximity to existing FirstMerit branches, said spokesman Rob Townsend.
FirstMerit this spring purchased Citizens Republic of Flint, Mich. That nearly doubled the size of Akron-based FirstMerit and gave it operations in Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio.
In Ohio, four of the closed six Citizens branches were within a half-mile of an existing FirstMerit branch. The farthest was 2.5 miles away, Townsend said.
Employees at the closed branches were assigned positions at FirstMerit, so there were no layoffs, he said.
The branches that closed in the Akron area were:
• Fairlawn: 3009 Smith Road.
• Hudson: 5 Aurora St.
• Medina: 890 N. Court Square.
Other closings were in Mentor, North Olmsted and South Euclid.
The Smith Road closing affects CFBank, which said it is in final negotiations to move to the former Citizens location.
Eight other former Citizens Bank branches in Northeast Ohio were rebranded as FirstMerit branches in June.
