Thousands of area workers are eligible for federal Earned Income Tax Credits — worth as much as $6,044 this year.
The Akron Summit Earned Income Tax Program, beginning Saturday again will offer free tax preparation and help to determine eligibility for the credits. The IRS says such programs are important, as one in five taxpayers do not file for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) that is owed to them.
This year, the EITC income thresholds range from $14,340 to $51,567 depending on filing status and number of dependants.
The maximum credit is $487 for taxpayers with no qualifying children, $3,250 with one, $5,372 with two and $6,044 with three or more.
With electronic filing, residents can get their full refund relatively quickly with direct deposit.
There are five preparation sites for the free tax filing. IRS-certified volunteers will help determine EITC eligibility and prepare returns. Appointments are necessary.
