Giti Tire USA, the North American division of the Singapore tire company, still isn’t ready to say where in the Akron area it plans to locate a tire technical center.
Giti Tire USA spokeswoman Tami Sisson said Tuesday that Giti’s North American division is considering sites in and near Akron and hopes to select a location by Nov. 1. In September, Giti Tire USA revealed plans for the research and development center, offering few details.
The facility will be the company’s first research and development center in the United States. Currently, the company, which makes passenger, truck/bus and off-road tires, has technical centers in China, Indonesia and England. Overall, the company employs more than 600 research and development workers.
Sisson said Tuesday that company officials are “reviewing different contracts” for possible sites.
She echoed her comments in September, saying she did not know how many workers the area technical center would employ.
She was unable to say whether the company was considering locating in an existing building or constructing new offices.
The Akron area’s experienced tire industry workforce was a draw for the company.
Hamid Aboutorabi, who will lead the new center, is a 23-year veteran of the industry who has worked at Kumho Tire technical center in Fairlawn as well as the Akron-headquartered Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
