Help for Medicare prescription information

By Robert Fenn

Q: My daughter helped me complete my Extra Help application, but she submitted incorrect information about my resources on the Application for Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs. How can I get my application changed now to show the correct amount?

A: Call 1-800-772-1213 or  visit your local Social Security office (an office locator is online at www.socialsecurity.gov/locator). Information on your application will be matched with data from other Federal agencies. If there is a discrepancy that requires verification, we will contact you.

Q: If I retire and start getting Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, will my Medicare coverage begin then too?

A: No. Medicare benefits based on retirement do not begin until a person is age 65. If you retire at age 62, you might be able to continue to have medical insurance coverage through your employer or purchase it from an insurance company until you reach age 65 and become eligible for Medicare. For more information about who can get Medicare, visit www.medicare.gov.

Send questions to Robert Fenn, Social Security Administration, Second Floor, Federal Building, 2 S. Main St., Akron, OH 44308. Fax: 330-375-5616 or email: Robert.Fenn@ssa.gov.
