Payless store at Chapel Hill among those to close nationwide

By Betty Lin-Fisher Published: April 5, 2017

In another blow to Chapel Hill Mall, the Payless ShoeSource store will be among 400 nationwide to close while the retailer seeks bankruptcy protection.

Payless on Tuesday said it would immediately close 400 poorly performing stores nationwide. It hopes to modify leases for some other stores or evaluate them for closure.

A story in Wednesday's  paper said employees at Chapel Hill and Summit Mall stores said they believed they were safe. In a list released by Payless on Wednesday, in the Akron-area, only the Chapel Hill store on Brittain Road, is on the list of stores to close. A store in Massillon on Lincoln Way East will also close.

A store at 1198 S. Arlington Street closed several years ago and is not part of the 400 set to close.
