Local program looks at micro businesses for teens

Beacon Journal staff report

Locally produced TV show Micro Business for Teens: Starting a Micro Business will air at 8 and 10 tonight on WNEO/WEAO (Channels 45/49).

The 90-minute program, which will be offered to PBS nationally in the spring, is hosted by Carol Topp, a Cincinnati-based certified public accountant. Topp has written a series of books for teens on micro businesses, which have fewer than five employees, and runs her own micro business.

The 145-member studio audience for the program included adults, educators and students from area schools such as Coventry High School, Delta Academy for Girls, Field High School, Gilmour Academy, Hubbard High School, Hudson High School, Hudson Montessori Middle School, Cleveland St. Ignatius High School, Kent Roosevelt High, Laurel School, Seton Catholic School, University School and Western Reserve Academy. Students from seven schools participated in the question-and-answer portion of the show.

The program also marks National Entrepreneurship Week, which ends Sunday. It discusses what a micro business is, gives examples of businesses suitable for teenagers, offers instruction on writing a business plan and financing the business and more.

“Entrepreneurship is key to our economy and, according to the Small Business Administration, has been the fastest growing segment in the current recession,” said Trina Cutter, president and CEO of Western Reserve Public Media, in a statement. “With interest at an all-time high, it is only natural that Western Reserve PBS provide broadcast and print resources to educate our future entrepreneurs.”
