Nestle relocating pizza division to Solon

Nestle USA announced Wednesday it is relocating its frozen pizza division from Illinois to Solon, joining its other businesses and an expanding research center there.

Nestle’s Glendale, Calif.-based U.S. unit disclosed the move.

Nestle, the world’s largest food company based in Vevey, Switzerland, expects about 250 jobs eventually to come to Solon from the move and associated growth, adding to a current Ohio workforce of 2,500.

Nestle acquired the pizza division from Kraft Foods in 2010 for $3.7 billion. It makes such brands as DiGiorno, California Pizza Kitchen, Tombstone and Jack’s.

The company said the relocated operation can benefit from proximity to the $53 million product technology center it’s building in Solon, which is scheduled to open in early 2015. The R&D center will specialize in frozen and chilled foods research.

Nestle spokeswoman Roz O’Hearn said Wednesday the majority of the Nestle employees in Northbrook, Ill., “have been offered the opportunity to relocate with the business and many will be visiting in the coming weeks as they make their decision.

“This move, along with growth we expect to achieve, will add 250 new jobs here in Solon, where we employ 1,975.

“In Ohio, our employment is 2,500. The business will transition to Solon by mid-2014.”

O’Hearn said Nestle Pizza’s two bakeries in Wisconsin will continue.
