Summit County jobless rate stays at 6.8 percent, below Ohio average

Summit County’s unemployment rate for November was 6.8 percent, unchanged from October but up significantly from 5.9 percent a year ago, according to figures released Friday morning.

Summit County’s rate remained below the comparable Ohio average of 7.1 percent in November.

Rates were not adjusted to take into account seasonal factors.

Ohio had a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.4 percent, higher than the U.S. average of 7 percent for the month.

Akron’s November jobless rate fell slightly to 7.4 percent from 7.5 percent in October but up from 6.5 percent a year ago.

Cuyahoga Falls’ unemployment rate was 6.2 percent in November, the same as in October and up from 5.6 percent in November 2012.

Unemployment rates rose in 60 of Ohio’s 88 counties, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Rates ranged from a low of 4.4 percent in Mercer County, on the Indiana border, to a high of 15.6 percent in Monroe County in the southeastern part of the state.

Elsewhere in Northeast Ohio:

• Cuyahoga County’s jobless rate rose to 7.4 percent in November from 6.9 percent in October; the rate a year ago was 6.7 percent. Cleveland’s jobless rate rose to 9.5 percent last month from 8.7 percent in October and 8.5 percent a year ago.

• Medina County’s unemployment rate rose to 6 percent last month from 5.5 percent in October and 5.4 percent in November 2012.

• Portage County’s jobless rate was 6.8 percent in November, up from 6.7 percent in October and 5.9 percent a year ago.

• Stark County’s November unemployment rate was 7.2 percent, unchanged from October and up from 6.4 percent a year ago. Canton’s jobless rate fell to 8.4 percent in November from 8.7 percent in October. A year ago, the rate was 7.5 percent.

• Wayne County’s unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent last month from 6 percent in October and was up from 5.3 percent in November 2012.
