With the recent recall of Merck-produced Hib vaccine, Portage County Health Department Medical Director Dr. Angela DeJulius would like to reassure parents that all of the Hib vaccine doses given at PCHD are manufactured by Sanofi Pastuer, a different maker of the Hib vaccine.Hib stands for Haemophilus influenzae type b. The Hib vaccine prevents certain types of meningitis, pneumonia, severe throat infections and other serious infections. It is recommended for all children under 5 years old in the U.S. It is a three-dose shot series and it is usually given to infants starting at two months old along with their routine childhood immunizations.
Current immunization rates in the U.S. for Hib vaccine are high. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 94% of U.S. children 19-35 months of age were vaccinated against Hib. This has resulted in a dramatic decline in transmission of this disease, although it has not gone away completely. However, public health officials caution that outbreaks of vaccine-preventable illnesses can occur if immunization rates decline. According to records, only 65% of Portage County children have received time-appropriate immunizations by age three.
The Portage County Health Department provides immunizations to all children and adults. Any child can get their shots from the Portage County Health Department through the Childhood Immunization Walk-In Clinic.
The Childhood Immunization Walk-In Clinic is located in Child Health Services, which is on the first floor of the Portage County Administration Building. The Childhood Immunization Walk-In Clinic is open every Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Childhood immunizations are provided five days a week from 8am-4:30pm at Child Health Services. Call Sharon Waesch at (330) 297-5437 for further information.
The Portage County Administration Building address is 449 South Meridian Street, Ravenna.
Please call the Portage County Nursing Division at 330-296-9919 regarding the recent vaccine recall.
