I never wanted to be engaged on a special day, so when on Sweetest Day 1994, my boyfriend Tom asked me to go metal detecting with him to our favorite park, Hudson Springs, I didn't think anything of it. We walked for a while and found a few bottle caps. I then suggested we go down a hill to a flat area. When we got there the metal detector started to go off, so we started to dig. We first pulled out a piece of foil. Tom told me to keep digging and so I did. I then hit something hard. I told Tom I thought it may have been a box with a dead animal in it. I couldn't continue digging fearing what it might be, so Tom took over.
Eventually he found a wooden treasure chest and pulled it out. I then started to get suspicious, but I still didn't think too much about it. Tom then opened it and inside was a Precious Moments statue of a boy proposing to a girl. There was a small dog next to the boy and girl and on his nose was the most beautiful diamond ring. Tom then asked me to marry him and I said "yes". But it gets better.
Tom's father and brother were hiding in the woods videotaping and photographing the whole thing. What makes it even more special is that Tom, who is a carpenter, made the treasure chest himself which we still display. This was day neither one of us will ever forget. We still love to tell the story.
