AKRON, Ohio (July 24, 2008) -- Wasim Khan, M.D., has joined Akron Children's Hospital's Heart Center as director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging. He will start a cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) program at Akron Children's."MRI offers many advantages and will complement our other diagnostic tools, such as echocardiography and cardiac catheterization," said Dr. Khan. "MRI provides detailed images of the heart, the vascular structures and surrounding anatomy. It is non-invasive and exposes patients to no radiation. It will be a great tool to diagnose patients with complex congenital heart disease and to follow them up after surgery. The MRI will be used for both our pediatric patients and the adults we treat through out Adult Congenital Heart Service."
Dr. Khan earned his medical degree from Dow Medical College, the University of Karachi, Pakistan. Following a residency in pediatrics at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., he completed a fellowship in pediatrics at Nyack Hospital, Columbia University, N.Y. Dr. Khan also completed a fellowship in general academic pediatric cardiology at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland.
Prior to coming to Akron Children's, he was a pediatric cardiologist and director of the echocardiography lab at Janet Weis Children's Hospital/Geisinger Health System in Danville, Pa.
Dr. Khan is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He has a special interest in transesophageal echocardiography, fetal and 3-D echocardiography.
