Something Old: Local Bakeries that Stood the Test of Time

UPublish story by Christina Pilolli

Imagine a time when instead of a Starbucks on every corner, there was a small family-owned bakery.

Early every morning the aroma of fresh-baked bread and pastries waffled through the neighborhood.

You'd go in for your morning cup of joe and donut and the same smiling face greets you day after day, knowing your order by heart. So why not let an old-time, family-owned bakery play a special role on your wedding day?

Akron is still alive with small local, family-owned bakeries with generations of experience making wedding cakes. To the families that run these bakeries, your cake is not just another cake.

It's a tradition.

A work of art that requires a delicate family touch and countless hours of dedication.

A simple glance through the yellow pages will show the generations of bakeries in this area. Here are our picks of the family-owned bakeries that have stood the test of time:

Ninni's Bakery (1155 E. Tallmadge Ave., Akron, 330-634-0060)

For three generations the Ninni family has been specializing in their Italian Torte cake, a unique blend of chocolate and vanilla pudding layered with a rum sponge cake and topped with whipped cream icing. Nine out of ten of their costumers come in specifically for this flavor-filled wedding cake. You can expect to pay $2.75 a serving for this specialty, but make sure you order at least one month before the big day.

Hiss Bakery (186 2nd St NW, Barberton, 330-745-4222, www.hissbakery.com)

For 52 years and three generations the Hiss family has been baking wedding cakes for thousands of brides. Hiss's wedding cakes run $2.00 per serving and come in an assortment of flavors including chocolate, white, and marble. At no additional cost a flavored filling can be added to the cake. Karl Hiss, who now runs the bakery, recommends placing your order early, "the sooner the better." However, he said they have filled orders as late as one week before the wedding.

Vincent's Bakery (2038 Bailey Rd. Cuyahoga Falls, 330-923-8217, www.vicentsbakery.com)

Passed on from father to son, the Massoli family has been operating Vincent's Bakery since 1959 and has recently received the honor of being named #1 Bakery in Cuyahoga Falls by the Akron Beacon Journal. Their specialty is the Italian cake, which is a special mixture of yellow sponge cake layered with chocolate and vanilla custard. For a three-tier cake that serves around 150 people, you can expect to pay between $355.00 and $380.00. To find out what makes their cakes so special, make sure you place your order two months in advance.

Your wedding day is special and your cake should be just as special. Why not make it a family tradition for the bakers as well?
