Hospice of VNS Volunteer Honored by Girl Scouts

UPublish story by kward

Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) volunteer Lois Waples, a Suffield resident, was honored by the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio on April 25, 2009 as a 2009 Hidden Heroine. The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio Hidden Heroine program recognizes “unsung heroes” who make significant contributions to our communities through their volunteer efforts. Ms. Waples was one of six women chosen this year for this unique honor.

Ms. Waples has volunteered for Hospice of VNS for three years and was nominated for this award by Terri DeGeorge, Manager of Volunteer Services for Hospice of VNS. Every Wednesday Ms. Waples drives 40 miles round trip to the Hospice of VNS Care Center in Fairlawn where she visits hospice patients and their families; readies the Family Kitchen for use; attends interdisciplinary meetings on behalf of the Volunteer Department; and helps out with other special projects as needed. She also mentors new volunteers.

Ms. DeGeorge says in her nomination, “Lois’ strengths are her compassion and calm, assuring demeanor which makes her an excellent patient visitor and family supporter. Lois’ willingness to help in any area that is needed, without recognition of any kind, is something special.”

Besides her volunteer work at the Hospice Care Center, Ms. Waples also is active in her neighborhood, helping families in need of extra support. She also volunteers in her parish church at St. Joseph’s in Mogadore where she is principal of the CCD program and leads faith-sharing discussion groups.

For information on volunteering for Hospice of VNS, please call Terri DeGeorge, Manager of Volunteer Services, at 330-668-4650 or 800-335-1455, Ext. 4650.
