TALLMADGE, OHIO (Oct. 29, 2009)—American Elite AllStars of Ohio and Akron Children’s Hospital today announced that the fifth annual Children’s Cheer Classic, a cheerleading and dance competition, is set for Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at the John S. Knight Center in Akron, Ohio. National City Bank and Great Lakes Championship Company also will return as partners in the annual event, established to raise awareness, funds and gently used books for the hospital’s Reach Out and Read Program. Event registration is now open and continues through Jan. 24, 2010.
“This event is not only fun,” Akron Children’s Hospital’s Reach Out and Read Coordinator Karen Carbaugh says, “but it helps us ensure that books remain a routine part of every child’s pediatric office visits. Our goal is two-fold: to ensure that every child grows up healthy and that every child grows up inspired by books and propelled by their love of reading. American Elite’s support in helping us achieve that goal is irreplaceable.”
The Children’s Cheer Classic has grown in popularity and impact over the past five years. Since the event’s inception, Elite has raised $52,000 to purchase over 19,000 new books. In addition, American Elite's book collection challenge to participating teams has to date resulted in the collection and donation of nearly 22,000 gently used books to the program. Last year, more than 50 teams competed in the event.
“We look forward to this every year,” says Elite Coach and Owner Wanda Whipkey. “Of course, we love the opportunity to gather cheerleading programs from across Northeast Ohio, but Elite’s core organizational focus is developing healthy young children who are equipped and empowered to lead successful lives. In that regard, we share a common purpose with Akron Children’s Hospital’s Reach Out and Read Program. And” Whipkey added, “with National City Bank and Great Lakes on board this year, we believe we’re going to exceed last year’s results.”
Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and the love of reading. The program trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give brand new, developmentally appropriate books to children at pediatric well-checks from six months to five years of age, with special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skill so children can enter school prepared for success in reading.
2010 EVENT REGISTRATION KICKS OFF OCT. 29
