University Parent Media introduces guide to University of Akron

University of Akron

UPublish story by Beth Samek

AKRON, Ohio, February 18, 2008 - University Parent Media today introduced The Guide to Akron in partnership with the University of Akron Office of Orientation. The Guide is specifically focused on providing parents with vital university and local information for the upcoming Spring Orientation sessions.

University Parent Media currently works with higher education institutions across the country improving parent relations. This latest addition to the UPM roster will help UA at no cost to view parents as partners in student success. “We encourage local businesses to support this publication through purchasing advertising space,” said sales director, Kristen Seldon.

The Guide will include institution-specific information regarding orientation as well as local information on banking, dining, hotels and off-campus housing for parents and students.

In addition to The Guide, which will be available on campus throughout the year, UPM has introduced a supplemental Web site, which will allow parents to access the content of The Guide online.

Parent relations is a hot topic in higher education, and the ‘helicopter parent’ phenomenon is grabbing headlines. University Parent Media is committed to connecting communities and offering solutions for schools and parents to help find the key to this important issue.

University Parent Media was founded in 2003 by Sarah Schupp and inspired by her own parents wanting to know where to shop, eat, and stay while visiting her in Boulder, Colo..

UPM has won the Deming Center's Spring 2004 Business Plan Competition and was a finalist for the Boulder County Business Report's IQ (Innovation Quotient) Awards in 2005 and 2006. Recently Schupp was named one of Businessweek.com’s top 25 entrepreneurs under 25.

Today, UPM produces institution-specific guides, e-newsletters and comprehensive Web sites in partnership with universities across the U.S. for parents of college students. We enable universities to provide additional resources (at no cost) to parents who are hungry for information.
