Akron, Ohio - On Monday, March 31, 2008, Innes Sixth Grade Academy will be kicking off “Crosswalk Safety Week.” Sixth grade students will be presented with information and education about crosswalk safety. Physical Education teacher Chuck Morrison will introduce results from student focus groups regarding the safety and behavior of students that walk home from school and address students' safety concerns. In the fall of 2007, sixth grade students were observed running across Kenmore Boulevard, a 4-lane road, outside the designated crosswalk areas and against crossing lights. Staff and student concerns lead to student focus groups that provided their safety concerns, what causes the dangerous behavior choice, and possible solutions to the problem. Students reported education, policy, and environmental changes that may help to students demonstrate appropriate crosswalk behavior and improve conditions to ensure safe crossing.
Safe Kids Coalition has provided information and posters to be used in this program. Students also created their own posters to be displayed during “Crosswalk Safety Week.” Physical education teacher Chuck Morrison will kick off the program Monday, March 31, 2008 during student lunch periods. Monday thru Wednesday, Mr. Morrison will share the observations of dangerous street crossing, information found in student focus groups, school policy changes, environmental changes, educational sessions and guest speakers to take place throughout the week. A representative from the Akron Police Department Community Relations will speak on Thursday, April 3, 2008 about the legality of using crosswalks, strategies to cross, and issues related to stranger danger.
With school policy changes, education and information sessions, guest speakers, teacher, peer and parental encouragement, and media publicity, we hope to increase the need for appropriate crosswalk behavior. We also hope to increase community awareness to watch for pedestrians and slow down during the restricted school hours to prevent pedestrian related injuries.
