University Of Akron Challenges Cleveland Auto Show

The University of Akron

UPublish story by jms181

Engineering, elegance, function and form were the major themes that rolled onto center stage recently at the I-X Center. The Cleveland Auto Show is the largest auto show in North America, drawing over 650,000 auto enthusiasts. The University of Akron’s was no exception with students putting their innovative Challenge X hybrid car center stage. This revolutionary car is part of a four year program through General Motors to help design fuel efficient vehicles. The Engineering, Marketing students, and Zippy teamed up to take part in a competition that seventeen college programs made the cut for.

The University of Akron was one of 17 colleges nationwide that were selected to participate in this unique program, and Engineering and Marketing students at the University of Akron have teamed up to take part in the competition. Four years of work on the hybrid car, nicknamed “Joey”, by University of Akron students culminated in the revered reveal at the Auto Show. Engineering and Marketing students have combined their efforts to educate people about the importance of hybrid cars. Education outreach events at elementary, middle, and high schools along with a special showing at Fred Martin Chevrolet car dealership have been conducted by the students, and more programs are planned at local schools. Also in store for finishing up this competition is a drive with the modified car from New York to Washington D.C. with the other sixteen competing colleges.

During the course of this competition University students have received awards for overall outreach and model design. The best RADAR award, for best logistics and communication within the team and organizers, was also received last year. Through this program students have gained real world experience as well as recognition for their accomplishments.

This competition has been an excellent way for the University to showcase the talents of its students while giving them real world experience. This project has attracted attention and sponsorship opportunities from major corporations including BP, Delphi Corporation, the U.S. EPA, and U.S. Department of Transportation.
