The question often posed about the federal government, in so many words, is whether Washington is getting enough bang for its bucks. Well, the Government Accountability Office has answered, in a specific way, with a “no.”
The GAO has recommended, again, that the country dump the dollar bill for a dollar coin. Every other industrialized country has taken such a step — with the lesson that the paper currency must be eliminated at the same time.
And the projected savings? Roughly $4.4 billion over 30 years, according to the GAO. Yes, it amounts to a test of fiscal discipline.
