Red protection

Football has a concussion problem, at all levels, high school, college and professional. The players are bigger and stronger. More, too many deploy themselves like missiles, helmet first, inevitably leading to head-to-head collisions and the risk of harm, now and later.

Those in charge of the game have been looking for ways to ease the epidemic. Actually, a potential answer resides in that other football, yes, soccer, where the referee seeks to keep order by distributing a timely yellow card or red card.

Why not apply the red card in football? A player spears an opposing player in the head, and he not only is booted from the game, leaving his team down a man for the rest of the contest. He must sit out the next game, too.
