For Summit common pleas court

We recommend the election of Lynne Callahan

Two new judgeships and retirements on the Summit County Court of Common Pleas have sparked many competitive election contests. One race pits Judge Lynne S. Callahan of the Akron Municipal Court against Thomas Freeman, a magistrate in the Summit County Juvenile Court. Both candidates are strong and accomplished.

We recommend the election of Lynne Callahan on Nov. 4.

A municipal judge for the past 11 years, Callahan would bring to the bench a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the law that draws on her experience as a former assistant county prosecutor, an attorney and an Akron police officer.

Callahan, 51, has shown a capacity for leadership, managing her docket efficiently and helping plan and implement innovative special programs to address difficult social problems. She has guided the domestic violence court since it opened in 1998. She has presided over the drug and mental health courts as well. She helped with planning the intervention program for those seeking to regain their driver's licenses after a conviction for operating vehicles while intoxicated.

She is enthusiastic about the potential in common pleas court to expand the specialized dockets to include child-support and mental-health cases and a focus on employment opportunities for ex-felons. She recognizes she faces a learning curve with the more complex criminal and civil cases in the common pleas court. Her solid record on the municipal bench signals she will make the transition.

Freeman, 51, is running his first race for elective office stressing his broad litigation experience, including 12 years as a senior attorney for then Charter One Bank. He has spent the past three years at the juvenile court handling delinquency cases. Impressive as Freeman is, Lynne Callahan is the better prepared and the better choice in this race.
