The mayor's college scholarship program extends a generous invitation
Published on Wednesday, Oct 08, 2008
On Monday evening, the City Council approved an ordinance clarifying student eligibility for the Akron Scholarship Plan. The rules are appropriately broad, covering students attending Akron Public Schools and private, nonprofit schools such as Archbishop Hoban, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Our Lady of the Elms high schools. Certain home-schooled students would be eligible, plus students attending charter schools sponsored by the Akron district.
The eligibility rules reflect the larger purpose of scholarship program advancing the city as a whole and thus the region by opening the door wide to higher education. Hardly anyone needs to be reminded about the high cost of college or the importance of acquiring necessary skills.
With that in mind, it is worth emphasizing that the scholarship program places no restrictions on eligibility due to income. Recently, the mayor had to shoot down as untrue claims that the scholarships would be limited to students in households with incomes below $45,000. Let's repeat: That isn't the case. There is no limit based on household income.
That broad eligibility puts the focus where it should be. Akron has a rare opportunity to invest in its future. Everyone has a stake.

Vote NO.
Vote yes
Vote NO until Don comes out of hiding with all the facts regarding the sewer lease rules & regulations. On the heels of the bail-out we citizens should not be mandated to once more hand anyone anything without all the facts upfront. Nice job on the pseudo-sholarship rules (no one pays back a true scholarship). Now give us the facts on the lease rules & regs. Before November 4. That's a direct order from your bosses, Don. The Akron taxpayers. Not your Beacon backpocket cheerleaders.
'Atta, boys! Never will the mayor find more loyal foot soldiers than the Beacon editorial writers. Their allegiance to him is unfailing and unparalleled. In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd swear they're on his payroll, just like David is (see post above).
David, as in Dave Lieberth? LOL.
why isn't the ABJ mentioning the 30 year repayment of this so called 'scholarship'? Why isn't the ABJ mentioning that is 'last resort funding' after student loans, grants, etc have been applied to schooling bills? Why isn't the ABJ mentioning an interview a city official gave saying that the first $73 million of this lease was going to pay off existing city debt? The ABJ is furthering the fraud that Mayor Don is perpetuating against the public. This is not a FULL SCHOLARSHIP, it is a LOAN for funding after other funding has been exhausted.
