The Cavaliers bet on a winning combination of Shaq and LeBron

The Cleveland Cavaliers aren't in the mood for patience. The players, coaches and executives still feel the pain of losing in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, visions of Dwight Howard pounding the ball through the hoop throbbing in their heads. The Cavaliers want a championship now, and thus they have delivered an answer for Howard, and the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, for that matter. They've acquired skill, power and presence in the post, in the form of Shaquille O'Neal.

O'Neal ranks among the very best ever to play his position. He has four championships. Indeed, many have noted the pattern: Match O'Neal with a splendid swingman, Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade, and a title follows. We hardly need to mention the all-world swingman already at work in these parts.

Will the pattern hold?

The excitement among Cavaliers players and fans has been building as they noodle further the concept of O'Neal and LeBron James together. Dan Gilbert, Danny Ferry, James and others have looked at all the angles, watched film and examined numbers. They didn't take the step lightly. Zydrunas Ilgauskas appears ready to come off the bench, gracefully accepting a big change, putting team first.

The Cavaliers faithful also sense that the club has another adjustment or two to make. Then, of course, all of it must jell in the regular season and the playoffs, O'Neal defying his 37 years, developing a place in the offense, anchoring an already formidable defense, the team maintaining its winning chemistry.

The disappointed Cavaliers departed Orlando determined to get better. They haven't wasted any time seeking to get there.
