For the Summit County Council

Roemer, Rodgers and Palumbo in the at-large Republican primary

Republicans hold just one seat on the 11-member Summit County Council, with Gloria Rodgers representing District 3. Yet in this year's race for three at-large seats, all the action in the May 4 primary is on the Republican side. Rodgers, in mid-term, is among four Republicans running at-large. Three will advance to the November ballot to face three Democratic incumbents.

The other Republicans are Bill Roemer, a retired sales executive from Richfield, Mendy Palumbo, a benefits consultant from Barberton, and Amy Schwan, a retired tavern owner from Akron who is a local Tea Party organizer.

We recommend the election of Bill Roemer, Gloria Rodgers and Mendy Palumbo in the May 4 Republican primary.

Roemer, who ran unsuccessfully in District 1 two years ago, is an especially strong candidate. He would bring valuable business experience to the council. The former Ameritech executive and certified public accountant also is active in the community. Among other things, he is a long-term substitute teacher in the Revere schools.

Roemer remains an advocate of regional cooperation among local governments to gain greater efficiency. More, his expertise from the business world would help country government advance economic development projects, and jobs.

Rodgers, of Stow, is a charge nurse at Portage Path Emergency Services. She was, in 2008, a bright spot for Summit Republicans, who lost every other contested partisan race on the local ballot. A win by Rodgers in November would give Republicans two council seats, because the party would name a replacement in District 3.

Rodgers is a fiscal conservative. That said, she takes a thoughtful approach, agreeing with the direction county Executive Russ Pry, a Democrat, has taken in trimming expenses. She wisely favors tighter oversight of county agencies and further efforts at consolidating the functions of local government. Rodgers also offers insight on health issues.

Palumbo, a Tea Party supporter, is concerned largely about national issues. But his business has brought him in touch with many units of local government. He understands the value of regionalism from observing local governments pooling resources to purchase benefits.
