Not too long ago, Debe Terhar, the president of the Ohio Board of Education, apologized for an “error in judgment.” Her criticism of President Obama had taken the form of posting a photo of Adolf Hitler on her Facebook page. On Tuesday, she overstepped again in embarrassing fashion.
Terhar declared at a board meeting that The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is “totally inappropriate” for high school students. Put aside that the work of the celebrated Morrison has been widely read and discussed in schools across the country. Where would Terhar stop in barring books?
Still, hers wasn’t the only embarrassing moment. Mark Smith, a fellow board member, added that he sees “an underlying socialist-communist agenda.” Really, in Toni Morrison?
