Defense of the deputies

On Oct. 1, a tragic event took place in Akron when an elderly woman shot herself, presumably because she was facing eviction from her home.

Unfortunately, there has been some misunderstanding about the role of the Summit County Sheriff's Office in such cases, and our personnel have been criticized on radio and via the Internet. I'd like to clarify the process and the part our deputies play.

A writ of possession is issued by a court to transfer possession of a house after a judicial sale due to foreclosure. Sheriff's deputies, along with a representative from the bank, are ordered to serve the writ to the resident being evicted, which informs them that the eviction process has been initiated.

If the writ cannot be personally served, a notice is left at the house and deputies will return until it can be. If the writ is served, residents are told they have 10 days to vacate the house. If they have not moved after 10 days, then an eviction date will be scheduled at which time the resident will incur the cost of movers and storage of their property.

Sheriff's deputies do not evict anyone. They are the servers of the writ and they are on hand when someone is evicted to ensure order.

Our deputies and their supervisors do their best to treat residents with respect and dignity and help them understand the process. They provide residents with information on resources available to them and how they can obtain assistance in their circumstances.

It is awful when someone loses a house due to eviction, and it is terrible when it ends as it did in the above case. But, please do not be critical of Summit County sheriff's deputies who are doing the best they can in an already unpleasant assignment.

Joe Biden knows
the middle class

I am writing to let voters know what kind of man Sen. Joe Biden is. I was at a union hall rally when I heard Biden speak. He talked about the concerns of the middle class. After the speech, he began walking around shaking hands and speaking to everyone.

I was two rows back looking on, as were many other people. When he came past me he asked my name and took at least two minutes of his time to talk to me. He felt my pain. I could see it in his face.

Plain Joe is what the working man needs in these times. Certainly, anytime a politician can look in your eyes and see the pain in your face, and then take the time to talk to you, he's definitely worthy, in my opinion, to sit in the vice-presidential chair. His words came from his heart and I have no doubt he is here for the working middle-class. I wish everyone could meet him, he honestly knows our pain.

Let votes reflect intent

In response to ''Don't be fooled by payday lenders' ads,'' (Voice of the people, Oct. 10), I feel that 28 percent is certainly enough to charge for a loan. Charging any more is just preying upon those already struggling.

So when voting on Issue 5, make sure you understand that voting ''yes'' means you want them to stop charging exorbitant rates. We must all be careful this election concerning the issues. Make sure your ''yes'' or ''no'' vote means what you want it to mean.

I personally think all issues should be ''for'' or ''against'' to keep it simple.

Drug treatment doesn't
keep the public safe

I want to chime in on the article (''Summit opposes drug case decision'') on Oct. 6. I feel that Sherri Bevan Walsh, the Summit County prosecutor, should take her position even further.

I would not want to get my car fixed only to learn the person who worked on it was a recovering addict. I have to trust that he or she gets it right. Nor would I want to have a plumber or electrician in my house if he or she was a recovering addict. My house could be seriously damaged or burn down.

I have to trust that my kids' school bus drivers and their teachers and my priest are all drug-free.

Why did Walsh limit her opposition to just medical personnel? Why should anyone be granted this program? It is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Please put them all in prison. Keep us safe.

The case
against Issue 3

Please vote ''no'' on state Issue 3, a proposed constitutional amendment regarding private property rights for ground water, lakes and other watercourses.

The Ohio Coastal Resource Management Project, a nonprofit organization, opposes Issue 3 for the following reasons:

This constitutional amendment is unnecessary. The courts have made it very clear that property owners have a protected right to the reasonable use of the groundwater flowing under their property, and of the water in a lake or watercourse that is on or flows through their property.

Property owners do not actually own the water beneath or on their land. They have a protected right to the reasonable use of the water (a natural resource) that is on or under their property, so long as the landowner's use does not unreasonably interfere with the rights of other adjacent landowners. This property interest is subservient to the public welfare.

This amendment might cause unexpected consequences because private property rights would not be limited by other sections of the state constitution, including provisions governing home rule powers of local governments, conservation of natural resources and the use of an initiative or referendum for nonuniform rates of property taxes.

Vote ''no'' on Issue 3.

Lease sewer system?
One more disaster

Ever since deregulation started in the 1980s, our jobs and quality of life have gone down hill.

Airlines either folded or merged. Utility companies had to change. Trucking companies went out of business. NAFTA took our jobs and businesses overseas. And now we are in a near-depression.

Our mayor wants to lease the city sewer system. This would be another disaster. Maybe we should privatize the mayor's office. Hire people with a 90-day contract. If they don't do the job, get rid of them.

Time to tap
into Iraqi oil

It is said that Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world next to Saudi Arabia.

Since Iraq now has a very secure surplus in its treasury, I say that this is the ideal time for us to attach that oil. Pump it day and night for tanker shipments to our refineries until we retrieve every nickel that we have spent there.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy gasoline for 60 cents a gallon? How about it President Bush and Sen. Voinovich? Let's have some action on this soon. It would also help to balance this bailout spending. This would be the true ''Mission Accomplished.''

Don't blame Bush

Obama has ideas
to lead America forward

I am voting for Barack Obama because he will halt the Bush administration's zero-regulation policy that has caused us so much economic turmoil, starting with the meltdown of Enron and leading up to our current troubles on Wall Street.

He will also stop the giving of huge tax beaks to companies that ship U.S. jobs overseas, a practice that made a few CEOs extremely rich, to the detriment of the rest of us.

He will actually lower my taxes since I make less than $250,000 a year.

He will restore America's standing in the world, because other nations overwhelmingly favor Obama as a visionary leader, a man capable of extending the olive branch as well as the sword, depending on which instrument will best benefit the United States of America.

And yes, Obama will get us out of Iraq as soon as the situation there permits it.

I am not voting for John McCain because, despite his claims of being a maverick, McCain has voted in agreement with George W. Bush 95 percent of the time over the past eight years, effectively endorsing what has become a disastrous presidency.

His campaign is currently being run by lobbyists, the very same people who are now largely seen as the problem in Washington, the special interests.

McCain has picked a dangerously unqualified running mate, a cultural warrior meant to create a sideshow, deflecting attention away from McCain's congressional record and firing up the religious base of voters.

John McCain's age and health history make this especially important since he has a greater than average chance of not being able to complete a four-year term. I came to the above-mentioned conclusions after consulting a wide variety of media, and I would encourage other voters to do the same.
