Irrational in Washington
The politics of the dominant voices in our nation's capital are increasingly pointing to the obvious conclusion, in my opinion: that Washington, D.C., has become an insane asylum and the inmates — our legislators — are running the asylum.
On the basis of unproven and merely speculative thinking, legislation providing for the distribution of bailout seed money literally thrown to the winds, hoping the billions will land and take root, has been passed. Any substantial signs of new growth yet? None to be notably observed.
Now, more irrational legislation is looming — cap-and-trade and universal health-care, both of which will only guarantee the certain bankruptcy of our nation. Individually we cannot spend money we do not have. Somehow, it never occurs to our legislators that the same common-sense economic principles apply also to government.
Considering all of the fiscally irresponsible legislation already passed, one could readily conclude that insanity has settled upon our legislators, at least upon the ones who have signed onto such legislation.
Are we now likely at the point of no return to good government? The faintest chance of a return to sanity would necessarily involve a whole new view of what government should be about.
Should not the motto of good government be, and declared repeatedly: Government cannot solve all of your economic and health-care problems, never has and never will?
But for decades now, and more than two generations of Americans have been led to think that big government is the solution to the major ills of society. The motto should also include: Primary responsibility always rests with the individual.
Is there any hope the inmates of the asylum will be rehabilitated and return to sanity? Not likely. Any real change will be because the American people vote out of office those who put in place legislation that has no likelihood of fostering an economic recovery.

Mayor's passion for Akron
During the past few months, there have been many accusations about Don Plusquellic. If anyone wants to accuse the mayor of anything, please accuse him of being passionate for our city and for our community.
During my career with the Akron Public Schools, I worked with the mayor on numerous issues and projects. His ideas were endless, as was his energy. If he saw a successful program in another city, he wanted a similar program for Akron.
If APS was on the ballot for an operating levy or for funds to build our new schools, the mayor tirelessly attended hundreds of events to campaign for passage. He wanted to make sure that our children have the best opportunities possible. He was willing to take risks if he felt that the risks would benefit our young people.
The mayor understands the importance of education to the vitality of a community, and he is passionate about the vitality of our city. Again, if you want to accuse Mayor Plusquellic of anything, accuse him of his passion for Akron. He has made us an All-America City again, like it or not.

Mr. McLeland
Bravo
Well Put.
This President is a nightmare
This congress is part of the bad dream
I can only hope by 2010 Americans will see what a huge blunder electing Barak Hussein Obama really was
@ donna loomis - For the city hall hero to attend hundreds of events for the schools, I suppose that durin' his lifetime tenure, that could be an accurate figure. Figure 8/year over some 23 years to achieve the "hundreds" milestone y'all portrayed. Not exactly a tireless campaign for the schools. But an accurate number to be sure.
As for seein' new ideas when in another city, all that comes to mind is when he was vacationin' in Florida, saw some shops on the street level of a parkin' deck, thought it was a great idea, brought it back to Akron, proposed it, and then wrote off his vacation on the taxpayers because he was workin' while on vacation. Like many of his ideas, it never came to pass, but he got a nice free vaction out of it.
I'm sure he did that when he saw a nifty idea for our schools while on vacation as well.
Mr. McLeland, tginakron and Beta,
Wow- 3 voices of reason this morning... Thank you!
RECALL YES! In Washington TOO!!! (I wish)...
@Mr. McLeland, got a single thing to offer besides p*ssin and moanin?
@Ms, Loomis, agreed that Akron's kids seem to be a high priority and motivator for the mayor.
@BM, once the recall is over, why don't you treat yourself to a nice trip? Your enthusiasm for the recall seems largely based on travel envy.
Is this Loomis woman naive, gullible or stupid. I don't think she could be stupid, after all, she was a "deputy" superintendent. There's that word again - the mayor has many "deputy" mayors or assistants, almost all making over $100,000. per year, what do they do? If all of them did just a little bit of work, say $25,000 per year's worth, with so many of them the Mayor had nothing else to do except attend hundreds of events feigning passion for Akron. Loomis fell for it. And the All-American City BS, "like it not" a bunch of corrupt enterprising Mayors get together on the taxpayers dollar in some selected city or resort and decide among themselves how many and who will be selected All-American Cities. No politics here! Just questions like "You having any problems Don that we can help out with? How about we call your city an "All-American City"? We're sure at least some people will fall for it". How about that City newspaper you have in your pocket or that Deputy Superintendent, she's pretty gullible and she loves you! Maybe that newspaper and that gullible ex-deputy could get together and print a free political ad two days before the mayor's recall election. We could just pretend it's a letter to the editor. Who is the editor anyway and how wacked out could this guy or gal be?
Excellent letter by Joseph C. McLeland - totally accurate and truthful!
tginakron, I GUESS YOU CAN READ BUT HAVE SOME PROBLEMS WITH COMPREHNSION. Mr. McLeland WAS TALKING GOVERNMMENT, NOT ONE PARTY BUT ALL PARTIES.
NO WONDER SOMEONE LIKE YOU ISW AN OBAMA BASHER, YOUR INTELLIGENCE LEVEL IS THE SAME AS GW BUSH.
I wonderd how long it would take for someone to bring up bush. How long will it take till this is Obamas economy?
@Minna Wade, don't you remember, everytime a conservative offers a semblance of a solution all we hear is "you lost, get over it, we don't want to hear anything from you, we're in charge now".
Ed...I would say 8 years...Just to be fair.
How can one not bring up Bush on this topic? I mean some of us don't put our heads in the sand and try to avoid topics that are truly relevent.
@Minna Wade, don't you remember, everytime a conservative offers a semblance of a solution all we hear is "you lost, get over it, we don't want to hear anything from you, we're in charge now".
Its the same way the Republicans did when Bush was in office for 8 years.. But at least us Democrats will have dialog with you on some matters but others I feel is worthy of telling you we don't want to hear it from you. Not after what your party did. No way.
@Sick of Politicians, you used all that space without making a single credible or worthwhile statement....you sure you're not sick of BEING a politician??
If the Bushes had a "D" by their name they would be loved... they too were big government, big spending, war mongering liberals....
Minna Wade, I AM sick of BEING a politician! Especially since I don't get all the perks your hero, The Don, gets. No set hours, nobody checking what I do on my taxpayer funded trips, the local paper in my pocket(that's figuratively speaking), many, many "Deputy" mayors and assistants sucking off the taxpayer cash cow without accountability, and people like you voting me into this gravy train every 4 years time after time after time. That's why the Don loves people like you, his supporters. Oh, I forgot, you don't pay income tax or real estate taxes. That's why his squandering tax payers money doesn't bother you. Yep the Don loves you and you love the the Don. A political love affair. May the Don and his supporters party-hearty Tuesday night. But please Minna don't drink too much in celebration, as the Don is known to be a bad bad influence in the area of drinking. WAIT, only the fatcats and the stooges are invited to the victory celebration. The sheep will have to celebrate together, I think in a private pen rented for you by His Highness, Your Mayor - you love him and I consider him a very lucky man in this life, but not so much, in the next. Now you see why I AM sick of BEING a politician - I don't get paid like your hero. Happy Father's Day Minna even if you're a woman! I love you!
Joe Mcleland...my thoughts exactly. Except I thought that 8 years ago.
Yes, Plusquellic is passionate . . . . . for Goodyear, for Ganley, for GoJo, for Testa, for Mr & Mrs Henry Johnson, and for others with their hands out for taxpayers money. He was not so passionate for the good restauranteurs on E Market St whose property he confiscated and sold to Ganley. He was not so passionate for the small home owners in the vicinity of Goodyear whose homes taken from them in order to "keep Goodyear in Akron'. Ms Loomis, you really don't know Plusquellic.
rmk, akron
@Sick of Being a Politician,
I love you too, baby. Now turn off that silly Fox TV and come let momma beat you at Scrabble again.
@Mr. Kraus, you're tipping your hand. Looks like you were on the losing end of some battles, just like most of the "passionate" recall rattles.
how much does mark williamson get to answer emails with pro don propaganda,
Im voting for the recall ...because every 4th of july Don closes the top floor of the parking deck for his personal party, and only the Don backers are allowed to enter,.....after all its his parking deck.....isnt it?
Mars - You strike me as an unhappy person. You probably blame Bush for all your failures.
As for me, I did well during the Bush years and am off to a good start under Obama. I simply invest any company that has the Obama Gov't as a competitor. For example, Ford. Invested in Ford as soon as Obama got involved and hired people with ZERO auto experience to run GM. Nice gains.
Some people need to stop blaming others and pointing fingers...just look in the mirror. Only then will you understand why things in Washington, and some urban communities have fallen into greed and bedlam. This doesnt have anything to do with race either. Right is right and wrong is wrong idiots.
