First, serve the needy
In response to the June 15 article by Linda Golz, ''Church agency suspends hot meals,'' I would like to support Joan Feaster's comments that something should have been done. I have volunteered at the St. John site alongside Feaster and a host of other wonderful people for the past few years.
There are a couple of things that need to be said. I would not know Donald P. Finn if he walked up to me on the street.
During those years in which Feaster and I worked together almost weekly, he never even dropped in to see how the St. John site ran. In the case that his coordinator became ill or needed to take another job, you would think that someone who is interested in expanding the program might drop in from time to time and become familiar with how the meal was prepared.
The other hot-meal site at Catholic Social Services on Main Street certainly does have a small apartment-size kitchen in which Donna McDonald (previous Hot Meals coordinator) managed just fine. Many times we prepared some of the meals for that site the previous evening at St. John's. It is unfair that McDonald is being made the scapegoat in the decision to close the meal service.
Furthermore, no one should accept the unfortunate closing of St. John's Church at the very end of October as a valid reason to stop the meal service in June. ''Cobbling together'' a sandwich with a piece of fruit and a cup of coffee is better than not eating at all. It might have been worth the cost of an ad in the classified section to see whether one of our many unemployed could fill the position of hot-meal coordinator.
In the end, it will be the adults and children we served who will suffer the most, not those involved in office politics.

Welcome arrests
I am so happy to read about the arrests in the case of Suzie, the little dog beaten during a burglary so severely it had to be put to sleep. I want to thank and bless the police for staying with this case and solving it. This little dog was worth more than those three pieces of scum.
I have been watching the papers for this ever since it occurred. The thieves were so cruel and won't get the punishment they deserve, but I am so glad that they were arrested.

Hate-crime laws erode freedoms
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is calling for hate-crime legislation, saying that it is time. He points to the examples of the recent Holocaust Museum guard murder and the army recruiting sergeant murders. The irony is that hate-crime laws would not have stopped those murders. If the state laws against murder did not stop those crimes, federal laws against hate will not stop such crimes.
However, hate-crime legislation can be used against many opponents of liberal Democrats. A large number of Republicans disagree with liberal Democrats on certain moral issues. If the hate-crime legislation were passed, these Republicans could be threatened with federal lawsuits for simply exercising their freedom of speech and freedom to disagree.
In addition to other problems, the hate-crime legislation could or would be used as a political tool to give the Democrats an advantage because many of their opponents would now be facing federal fines and/or jail time.
Furthermore, if the hate-crime bill is passed, many of those who hate conservative Christians will now be able to vent their hatred with impunity through the federal courts.
The hate-crime legislation is bad legislation. It erodes the very core of our cherished First Amendment freedom of speech and freedom of religion, without doing anything to stop hatred itself.

Hard lessons for American automakers
David Kerekes' June 17 letter (Buy American, save jobs'') assigns blame for our ailing auto industry on anyone who buys a foreign car. Specifically, he points the finger at owners of cars manufactured by Chinese and Japanese workers. I have yet to go for a drive where I didn't see a Volkswagen, an Audi or a BMW. Are owners of cars manufactured by Chinese and Japanese workers the only people responsible for the demise of the American auto industry?
I'm not sure where Kerekes has been for the past 30 years, but article after article has been written about the salary/benefit burden American car manufacturers carry compared to their Japanese competition. Surely, the auto workers, and anyone else who breathes, know that whatever benefits/salaries they collectively bargain for are passed directly to the consumer.
I've owned a number of American manufactured vehicles in my life. Some were new; some used. The last American manufactured car I drove was a 2006 Chevy Cobalt. This was the worst car I've driven since the 1970s. The fit and finish were marginal at best. If this is what General Motors considers a worthy response to its competition, it is delusional.
Who takes responsibility for the poor quality of this vehicle? The autoworker? GM? My guess is they'll point at each other. This is the type of car that's in my price range. The cars that I buy must last. I recently traded a 15-year-old Corolla for another Corolla. Fifteen years. Everything on this car still worked. Be honest, how many Chevy Cobalts do you think will still be on the road after 15 years?
When all of us were buying anything electronic the past 25 years to 30 years, did we consider how many American manufacturing jobs were lost? Is anyone taken to task for having something made by Toshiba, Sony or Panasonic? Do you get just as angry when you see someone mowing a lawn with a Husqvarna or a Honda?
We are all collectively responsible for the enormous trade deficit and the loss of those American jobs foreign competition won. The last time I was at a foreign car dealership, I didn't see any Japanese and Chinese workers — I saw American workers.

Is America losing its independence?
As Independence Day approaches, I can't help but think about what is going on with our country. Ironically and sadly, it appears the direction that we are going is just the opposite of what we will be celebrating on July Fourth. Isn't independence from government control what our founders fought for? Should July Fourth be changed to Dependence Day?
Most are aware that the government (not the private sector) now controls the majority ownership of the banks, the housing market, GM, etc. Also, it is now trying to own the health-care industry.
It appears, too, that the government is in the business of controlling the media. This has nothing to do with media bias. Take a look for yourself on the Drudge Report. This is extremely disturbing. Wasn't the media supposed to be the watchdog of the government? Wasn't that the intention of our country's founders?
Contrary to what the Obama administration is saying, that it has no desire to get in the way or to interfere with the free market and our freedoms, you must look at the actions and not the words, no matter how smoothly they are delivered. I kindly ask you to add it all up for yourself. Don't be politically seduced.
Happy Independence Day.

What matters is faith
This is in response to Barbara Piurkowsky's letter (''Faith shaken by church merger,'' June 12) regarding the Catholic Church merger.
First of all, the Catholic Church is not on the decline. Bishop Richard G. Lennon is doing what is necessary, and his intentions are not to push people away.
Merging is an emotional and heart-wrenching transition, but there will always be trials and tribulations in any church denomination. What counts are the members choosing to support, and not abandon, their faith.
It's not just a building but rather a place to pray, meditate, meet people and to have that special feeling when they leave.
This person was kicked off her church's financial committee because of her negativity. It's no wonder people questioned her ability to stay. Catholics who are complaining about the merger need to focus on ethical and moral issues and to support Bishop Lennon during these difficult times.

Don't judge James by one reaction
In response to the June 7 letter from Mike Tierney of Phoenix (''LeBron's crybaby act disgusts Cavs fan''): How dare you judge LeBron James on one human reaction. He is a wonderful human being. He has been a wonderful asset to Akron and Cleveland. Besides being charitable, polite, well spoken, a good example to young boys, a good father, son and partner, he is a natural talented athlete.
James has lived his sports life toward one goal: To be an NBA champion. That goal was shattered, and he was upset. Shame on those in charge for fining him $25,000.
He has always been gracious in all his interviews. Give him a break. We Cavs fans were disappointed in the loss. But we are still proud of the team. We can't wait until next season to see these talented, competitive sportsmen play. They are an exciting team, and we are proud of them all.
The Cavs are proud to have LeBron James as their captain.

Dear Ms Bako:
You stated:
"It's not just a building but rather a place to pray, meditate, meet people and to have that special feeling when they leave."
Yes. That is true, if that is really why you attend.
However, after all of that meditation and special feeling you were supposed to receive, you go on to say:
"This person was kicked off her church's financial committee because of her negativity. It's no wonder people questioned her ability to stay."
Was it really worth not turning the other cheek and writing your above commentary about another parishioner? Maybe a few more moments of meditation will assist.
Ethics? Ha.
Foreign competition has helped American cars come a long way. But, until American cars get better, people will buy foreign cars. It's pretty simple. The Corolla example is a perfect example.
I can't wait to see Lebron and Shaq play together. And it's just right around the corner.
On reading Marcu's letter, you have to wonder if he views the world through a very dark lens. First, it is inaccurate to say the government has majority ownership of banks--they still own some preferred stock in a couple of large banks, but it is not a majority and indeed many of the banks that accepted money from TARP have paid it back. Temporary ownership of GM was seen as a necessary evil to avoid the pains of a protracted and difficult bankruptcy. Many Americans, myself included, believe that a public option health care plan is a necessity--health care costs have grown out of all proportion to the rest of the economy and it is not slowing down. How are we any less free? I just don't see it. Maybe he feels less free because he didn't get the president he wanted. Boo hoo. The statement about the media being under government control is just silly.
Besides, our founding fathers fought for independence from the British crown, not from our own US government. They established a de
@Nancy J. Burkett - Yes he is all those things, but great leaders rise above their personal feelin's and lead the way by example.
For Independence day, T Jefferson..."the natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.... One of the profoundest preferences in human nature is for satisfying one's needs and desires with the least possible exertion; for appropriating wealth produced by the labor of others, rather than producing it by one's own labor.... In other words, the stronger the government, the weaker the producer, the less consideration need be given him and the more might be taken away from him. A deep instinct of human nature being for these reasons in favor of strong government, nothing could be a more natural progress of things than for liberty to yield and government to gain ground."
The Catholic church is not on the decline?! Care to back that up with a statistic? According to Georgetown University's catholic research arm, CARA, 45% of catholics born before 1943 attend mass weekly, 24% of those born between 1943-1960 and 15% of those born between 1961 & 1981. If that's not decline, then I don't know what is. People are more educated, and seeing the dogma of the church for what it is. Happy Independence Day!
The ultimate irony is I bet John Marcu has no problem with government intruding on a person's bedroom by telling them who they can and can't marry, or telling women they can't get abortions.
It's funny that for the last 8 years, people who exercized their right to speak out against the government were labeled as traitors and anti-Americans, and told to "shut up" or "love it or lave it"....probably by people just like Mr. Marcu.
Until the people who supposedly care about freedom raise their voices in protest against things like that I will always consider their pious cries nothing more than greedy self-interest in wanting to ensure businesses get the absolute most money they can at the expense of anyone who gets in their way.

Rayy :: The Catholic church is not just in America. The Cahtolic church is up in numbers worldwide.
In America? Floundering yes.
. . . because Catholics born post Vatican II were screwed as far as Doctrine and teaching goes. Liberal theologians twisted the meaning of Vatican II and ...well, we see just what liberalism did / does. Just like this administration VERY LIBERAL and VERY much screwing all of us of our CONSTITUTIONAL rights. So, Catholics were screwed and now all are being screwed Catholics, Christians, Atheist, dog catcher . . .
Marcu writes: Isn't independence from government control what our founders fought for?
No, it wasn't. Maybe some history study beyond elementary texts would be helpful.
@ Ms. McDonough, if you wouldn't recognize Mr. Finn, how can you assert that he never dropped in? Regardless, the loss of valuable programs is a sad, sad reality of this economy. Nonprofits cannot continue to sustain programs whose cost threatens their ongoing viability.
@Poopus, how surprising that you would blindly follow dogmatic fabrications in matters of both faith and politics. Shocking. A tea party would be lovely except that it might be tainted with the likes of you. And what's with the chairs? Aren't you there to stand up for something?
Dear Smelly Pooper-Do: Keep up your ridiculous "tea parties". Glad to see you and the rest your KOOKY friends have something to occupy your paranoia and fear this weekend.
@John Marcu:
Those screaming "the sky is falling" are wonderful people like White Pride Worldwide (David Duke and Don Black)
And the American Civil Rights Union (think Kenneth Starr and Kenneth Blackwell - and Robert Bork).

FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR!!!!!!
BOO!!!!!!!!
Wrong John - John Burhoe's regurgitation of Glenn Beck's radio show.
John Burhoe needs to research his topic before shooting his stupid mouth off. He is confusing the term "hate crime" with the term "hate speech". They are not the same and he hasn't a clue about what he is talking.
First and foremost, in order for an act to be considered a hate crime, it must be a crime in and of itself. For example if I burn down someone's house that is a crime of arson. If I do it because the person is black, then that becomes a hate crime and the penalty is greater than if I did it for non-racist reasons. Hate crime convictions up the degree of the crime when it is done for bigoted reasons.
The term hate speech was coined by liberal wannabes who can't stand it when someone disagrees with them. So-called hate speech is not considered by any reasonable person as an acceptable legal term or action. Laws against so-called hate speech are undeniably unconstitutional and should/will never be considered in this country as long as it values freedom.
What a stupid letter from a major ignoramous!

bullthistle,
"Isn't independence from government control what our founders fought for?
No, it wasn't. Maybe some history study beyond elementary texts would be helpful."
I can not imagine what sophisticated history texts you might be reading from which would make you think otherwise.
How about the Constitution? Why would they go to the trouble of inventing and setting into motion a system of government if they wanted none?
The problem with America is not liberal folks but stupid folks....same with the world...
Minna,
"How about the Constitution?"
Have you read it? Read their writings? Their intention was to LIMIT government. They believed that government was the greatest threat to liberty and mankind, which btw history has proved in every case.
You guys can keep your "hope" and trust in other men to wield power over you, but I simply do not understand this lemming like thinking. You do not want to be free? To make your own decisions? To raise your children and take care of your family yourself as you see fit?
Government does not attract the "best and the brightest," in fact, I think you could make the case that it attracts those that can not make it on their own. And that is who you want to give power over you?
I simply do not understand this faith in government...
Tampa,
Brilliant comment.
Minna Wade and Truth Sought (doubtful), why are you scared of the Tea Parties? You just can't stand that everyone doesn't love your new President can you? Wake up...this type of free speech is what this Country was founded on. You do believe in free speech right?
Minna, the porpose of the government is to defend the Country (military) and provide infrastructure (roads, etc) period. Stop believing that the government will make your life better. They have shown they cannot run a business (USPS) yet you people want more government programs. What a joke.
Buckeye,
You left some out. What about the state of education since the formation of the Education Department? How about Fannie and Feddie Mae? How about Social Security? How about Medicade and Medicare? How about the "Federal" Reserve? How about the bailouts and TARP? How about HUD? The list is almost endless...
The corruption is deep and wide and inevitable. Limited government, which assumes a vigilant population and FREE press, is the only hope for individual liberty.
So no one wants to donate to buy the Beacon?
Buckeye,
I am still waiting for Truth Sought to reveal the fruits of his labors. From his posts though, I am afraid that he does not even believe that truth exists. How else can you explain his posts?

"Top secret wouldn't want the angry-extremist-intelligent-posters mucking things up. That, I will give them credit for, - being
professional mucker uppers."
You know, I do not think that most of the "fellow travelers" are that sinister, I just think they are kind of lazy and do not think their policies through to their logical and realistic ends. They have been lulled by the false promises of Government.
My ultimate faith in man is that the (however they may become) enlightened individual will rise to the occasion when it presents itself. People ultimately yearn for the freedom that we have taken for granted and let slip away... but that spirit is always there just under surface ready to be called upon.
God if we only had a responsible media....
So if I set up an account specifically to buy the Beacon Journal, will no one contribute? I am almost serious about this...
@Don: Uhm, just so you know, my Nissan was built by workers in the US. In Tennessee, to be exact. So...you're really just talking about fighting for the unions - not American workers.
And who's responsible for a business falling into the toilet? Sure as s&#t it's not the workers that work in the plants - it's the dips that run the business.
Re: Catholics - easy solution to the problem - LET THE POOR PEOPLE HAVE SEX!
Thank you. :)
Save Ohio Libraries... from what?
blkswn :: like I said your the calm to my tempest. Plus you have a tig more faith in the "fellow travelers" than I. Scratch that . . . you have a whole lot more faith than I. Laziness is why we are in this mess. "Fellow travelers" are lazy and the news media is VERY lazy. As far as the Beacon goes save your money the 'fellow travelers' will just give more attention to the Daily Kos and The Huffington Post.
I'm wrapping up . . .
@blkswn, i agree that it was constructed in such a way as to demand minimal gov't infringement on the individual, yet bind a gov't upon us as a people.
@ blkswn - the Declaration of Independence is a good place to start. "...governments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed" does not imply independence from government.
Hi !!
Happy Independence Day.....Will the last person leaving the state, please turn off the lights !!!
@PooPooPie, when your illogic doesn't confuse me, your use of inside jargon realted to your extremist views loses me. Funny, too, that you can't decide whether you are the angered party, or the target of others' anger. I simply find you an amusing poster child for the lunatic fringe. Hope your weekend treatment helps. Love, Minna.
@blkswn: First time reading a newspaper? Ohio Libraries are facing a 50% budget cut.
Here: http://www.akronlibrary.org/ - educate yourself.
The public library, much like public education are concepts whose time has probably come and gone, at least in their present form.
bullthistle::> the Declaration of Independence is a good place to start"...governments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed" does not imply independence from government.
Ummmm perhaps if you pick and chose and take your quotes in total isolation you could try and make that point, but yes it does imply just that. Then 10 years later they attempted to enshrine those ideas in the Constitution. If you really think that the Founders were envisioning the Federal Government dictating every aspect of human life, then you should be upset with your upbringing.... this is beyond a simple the failure of the public schools.
