If you saw Edward Snowden in your neighborhood, you might say: Gee, what a fine young man; someone you would want your daughter to bring home to dinner. But beware; looks are deceiving. Snowden has taken our national secrets and hung them out like dirty laundry on a line for the whole world to see.
Some admire him as a modern-day Paul Revere sounding the alarm, warning our enemies both here and abroad, but in reality he betrayed the very trust put in him to keep this nation secure and its people safe.
Some misguided individuals feel that this country is infringing on their Fourth Amendment rights spying on their every move. However, the security of this country and the safety of its people must always prevail, but the rights of the individual must never be compromised.
For now it appears Snowden is safe in Russia, and after being given a marriage proposal by the SoHo spy herself, Anna Chapman, he might just stay there. Should he ever be captured, he should be tried for no less than treason.
Modeling cruelty to animals
Models need to stop wearing fur in the Canton Hall of Fame Fashion Show (“Fashion show draws thousands to Canton,” Beacon Journal, Aug. 3). Wearing the skin of dead animals who suffer and die just for their fur is cruel and inhumane and should not be considered fashion.
Fur is expensive, elitist and serves no purpose other than selfish vanity.
I started a petition this year to the executive board of the Canton Chamber of Commerce: http://www.change.org/petitions/canton-regional-chamber-of-commerce-in-canton-ohio-stop-showing-cruel-fur-in-the-pro-football-hall-of-fame-fashion-show.
To date, we have over 300 supporters. The message is clear, that people who love animals and even fashion, see no need for the promotion of fur in a fashion show. If you want to change the image of dead animals in a fashion show, how about showing live dogs who need a home and are available for adoption?
There are many Stark and Summit County rescue groups, humane societies and dog pounds that can use the help and publicity.
Let’s show the world that fashion can help live animals, not exploit dead animals on a runway.
Pathway to understanding
As an American Muslim, I am blessed to be able to have an abundant source of food and water that I can gladly have access to every day. During the holy month of Ramadan, however, it is prescribed that I give up this liberty of having any nourishment whatsoever from dawn to sunset — aside from a meal before sunrise. Why?
It is because fasting serves as a way for us as Muslims to ultimately gain the pleasure of God. It also serves as a constant reminder for us to sympathize with all those people throughout the world who struggle in starvation.
In essence, not only is fasting spiritually enlightening, but also beneficial for the body.
Lastly, fasting can be a means of creating a sense of solidarity in our Muslim community, because many religions around the world fast in some capacity. Recognizing and acknowledging this can enhance a mutual respect and understanding between different faiths and religions around the world.
Mirror, mirror …
If members of Congress would look in the mirror, they would see the problem. It’s staring at them
