Offbeat show's viewers will want to remember new 'Samantha Who?'
By Chuck Barney Contra Costa Times
Published on Sunday, Oct 14, 2007
Don't miss:
Samantha Who? Christina Applegate makes a welcome return to series television in this offbeat sitcom about a woman struggling to right the wrongs of her life after emerging from a coma. Applegate, who first caught our attention as naughty Kelly Bundy in Married . . . With Children, plays Samantha Newly, who, after an auto accident and a hospital stay, develops amnesia. Slowly, Sam comes to learn that she wasn't the nicest of people before the crash. She was superficial, materialistic and, apparently, she cheated on her boyfriend (Barry Watson). Now, she's determined to make good, despite the bad influence of a pal (Jennifer Esposito) who actually liked the old Sam and doesn't want to see her go. The cast includes the hilarious Jean Smart as Sam's self-centered mother. 9:30 p.m. Monday, ABC.
Other bets
Sunday: In Girl Meets Cowboy, city women looking for love take a chance with a change of scenery that has them heading out into the rural West to wrangle for the affection of old-fashioned cowboys. But they'll also have to put up with a bunch of ''ranch-style'' challenges. 10 p.m., WE.
Monday: Hard to believe, but TV's top-rated comedy, Two and a Half Men, has reached its milestone 100th episode. The plot has Charlie getting ever so close to consummating his relationship with Linda, but he begins to see Rose's face everywhere he turns. 9 p.m., CBS.
Tuesday: They came, they emoted and they did their love scenes. Now we'll finally find out who's destined for daytime TV glory during the Season 4 finale of I Wanna Be a Soap Star. One lucky winner will walk away with a 13-week role on NBC's Days of Our Lives. 11 p.m., SOAPnet.
Wednesday: On a new episode of Criminal Minds, Hotch and the team believe that a pair of suspects may be working together in a series of brutal home invasions taking place in Denver. Do you miss Mandy Patinkin yet? 9 p.m., CBS.
Wednesday: Off-the-hook performances and appearances by the biggest names in the biz are being promised for the second annual Hip-Hop Awards. Nominated for Lyricist of the Year are Lil Wayne, Common, Jay-Z, T.I. And Kanye West. 8 p.m., BET.
Thursday: Guest star alert: Steve Buscemi drops by 30 Rock, where he plays a private investigator hired by Jack to keep GE from digging up dirt on him. Meanwhile, there's trouble for Tracy as his wife (Sherri Shepherd), announces a new plan to shadow him at all times to make sure he's behaving. 8:30 p.m., NBC.
Thursday: Viva Laughlin is one of the strangest new shows of the season. It's a drama-mystery with music (Oh no, shades of Cop Rock!) Lloyd Owen stars as freewheeling businessman whose attempts to open a new casino are hampered when his ex-business partner is found murdered. He's also known to break out in song at a moment's notice. Hugh Jackman and Melanie Griffith guest star. 10 p.m., CBS.
Friday: Will The Next Great American Band be the next great reality show? The folks behind American Idol apply the formula to an ensemble format and hope for similar ratings results. Us? We just want to turn up the volume and rock out. 8 p.m., Fox.
Friday: Tom Selleck seems to be settling in as a new cast member on Las Vegas, but tonight his character, Cooper, could be in trouble. Seems that a murder has taken place in his hotel suite, but he claims to not remember what happened and suspects he may have fallen victim to a blackmailer. 10 p.m., NBC.
Saturday: If you missed Damages, one of the most criminally addictive dramas of the summer, don't sweat it. Just cancel all your plans and catch Glenn Close and company in a 12-hour Damages marathon. That will get you all primed for the show's Season 1 finale on Oct. 24. 8 a.m.-8 p.m., FX.
