Largest seasonal skating rink in Ohio will debut after Lighting Spectacular

Perhaps you're interested in watching champion ice skaters, or just want to keep your preschooler's rump from landing on the ice. Either way, Akron's Holidayfest can provide the opportunity.
Among the flurry of activities downtown is the opening of the largest seasonal skating rink in Ohio about 8 p.m. Friday after the Holiday Lighting Spectacular. Skating on the 80-by-120-foot rink is free. Skate rental is $2.
Again this year, members of the Chemnitz, Germany, Skating Club, famous for producing world-class skaters, including Olympian Katarina Witt, will entertain with spins and jumps. Following their performances at 12:30, 3:30 and 7 p.m. Dec. 7 and 8 and again at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Dec. 9, the skaters will offer informal skating instructions.
If your little one is new to the skating scene, a preschool skate is being offered at 1:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Wednesday. Those young children will receive a free skate rental with an adult or older sibling skate rental. Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult on the ice.
Rink hours are:
8 to 10 p.m. this Friday.
1 to 9 p.m. this Saturday.
Sunday to Dec. 22: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays, closed Mondays.
11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 23 and 26-30.
11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 24, closed Christmas Day and open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Dec. 31.
Because the venue is so popular, it will remain open through Feb. 3, with hours in the new year as follows:
11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Open New Year's Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays, except from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Martin Luther King Day.
The Holidayfest is a family-friendly celebration of the season. Created in 2004, the event has attracted tens of thousands of visitors from across the United States.
Another popular draw to Lock 3 Park is the Chriskindl Market, which opens at noon Friday. Twelve cottages house vendors from Akron's sister city of Chemnitz. One-of-a-kind items from Germany, such as wooden toys, pewter ornaments and holiday decorations, will be for sale. Adjacent to the Market is a heated area that will offer authentic German fare. And for a buck, you can ride the Chriskindl Carousel, with proceeds going to Akron Children's Hospital.
The ''Welcome Santa'' Holiday Parade steps off at noon Saturday at South Main and Cedar streets.
To get around downtown, look for the free trolley that begins running Friday.
Heck, for a chunk of change, you can even have a private shindig at Lock 3 after hours. For a unique party, or more information about the happenings downtown, visit http://www.holidayfest.org.
Happy Holidays!
