Names in the news - Trial delayed

Trial delayed

A court on Monday postponed the trial of a former dormitory matron accused of abusing pupils at a school set up by Oprah Winfrey for disadvantaged girls.

Magistrate Thelma Simpson agreed to a request made by Tiny Virginia Makopo's lawyer, who said he needed more time to consult with his client.

The judge said a new trial date, likely in July, would be set during a provisional hearing on Friday.

Makopo has pleaded not guilty to charges of indecent assault, assault and criminal injury. Police say the alleged abuse against six teenage students and a fellow dormitory matron took place over four months.

Winfrey's $40 million school, opened in January 2007 with much fanfare, is designed to groom girls from disadvantaged backgrounds for leadership roles. Winfrey, a victim of child abuse herself, promised an overhaul of the school and said she had apologized to parents.

Ebert mending

Roger Ebert hopes to make it to his annual namesake film festival this week despite hip surgery.

The 65-year-old film critic is recovering at a Chicago hospital from minor hip surgery after a recent fall. The 2008 ''Ebertfest'' — sponsored by the critic's alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign — will be held Wednesday through Sunday.

A film critic at the Chicago Sun-Times for more than 40 years, Ebert has undergone a series of cancer surgeries in recent years, including the removal of a growth on his salivary gland and a tracheostomy that left him unable to speak.

Veggie delight

Police have arrested a pizza parlor manager on charges alleging he sold marijuana out of his drive-through window in Fort Smith, Ark.

Authorities said Monday that state and local investigators acting on a tip went to the Pizza Hut restaurant and found six ounces of marijuana and a set of digital scales in the manager's office.

Police said they arrested 28-year-old manager Aaron Massey on Friday on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Dinner plans

After wrapping his nine-year-run on Law & Order, Jesse L. Martin is returning to Broadway.

Martin is in negotiations to star in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, a new production based on the 1967 movie. Martin will play John Wade Prentice, the role played in the film by Sidney Poitier.

Yet to be cast are the white parents, Matt and Christina Drayton, whose daughter brings home Prentice, her black fiance. A bevy of A-listers — including Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton and Sigourney Weaver — have been bandied about for the roles, played in the film by Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

Sparks silenced

Vocal problems have forced Jordin Sparks to temporarily withdraw from Alicia Keys' tour and cancel all performances for the rest of the month, a representative for the American Idol champ said Monday.

''All of her April activities have been postponed or canceled so she can take care of her voice properly,'' 19/Jive Records spokeswoman Wendy Washington told the Associated Press.

The 18-year-old singer was scheduled to be the opening act on Keys' tour, which kicked off over the weekend in Hampton, Va.

Washington said Sparks is expected to rejoin Keys' tour in May.

Sparks was the youngest winner of American Idol when she won the talent competition last year.

And finally . . .

The New York Yankees denied Pope Benedict permission to ride the popemobile on Yankee Stadium's grass Sunday. It shows no respect for all that is holy. Imagine the pope wanting to drive a car on the ground where Mantle, DiMaggio, and Ruth once stood.
