'American Idol' results

Twice American Idol hopeful Carly Smithson was eliminated on Wednesday's show.

Smithson, who was a contestant in a previous season, was joined in the bottom two with Syesha Mercado.

That leaves just Mercado, David Archuleta, Jason Castro, David Cook and Brooke White.

Quincy Jones tribute

Tony Bennett, Roberta Flack and Gloria Estefan were just a few of the performers on hand Tuesday night as the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held a musical tribute to the groundbreaking composer and producer Quincy Jones, who turned 75 last month.

While there were few monologues about the man, several singers chose to express their admiration for Jones by changing the lyrics to some of the songs he helped create.

''It's Quincy's party, and he'll cry if he wants to,'' crooned Lesley Gore to the tune of the Jones-produced hit It's My Party, while Akron native James Ingram gave testimony while singing his hit One Hundred Ways.

''So much wisdom Q, I have to thank you!'' Ingram sang. ''You've got to cut me off before I start crying.''

Others performing at the event in New York included Patti Austin, Tevin Campbell, Take 6, Al Jarreau, Clark Terry and Savion Glover.

Preachers to split

Televangelist Juanita Bynum says in a two-part episode of Divorce Court that she's through with her marriage to minister Thomas W. Weeks III, who is on probation for assaulting her.

In episodes scheduled to air today and Friday, Bynum also says she had thoughts of suicide and weighs in on a case involving domestic violence. (The show airs locally at 2 p.m. on WJW, Channel 8.)

In a transcript of the show obtained by the Associated Press, Bynum said she would always love Weeks, but made a decision to ''love me more.''

Weeks pleaded guilty in March to assaulting Bynum on Aug. 21 in a hotel parking lot outside of Atlanta.

Divorce for Star Jones

Three years after tying the knot in a spectacular, over-the-top affair that caused some backlash, Star Jones has decided to end her marriage to banker Al Reynolds.

The 46-year-old TV personality quietly filed divorce papers March 26 in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan.

In a statement to Entertainment Tonight, Jones said: ''Several years ago I made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life. . . . The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone's life that requires privacy with one's thoughts.''

It's not the approach Jones took when she threw her uber-lavish wedding in November 2004. She received criticism for endlessly discussing the wedding — and plugging its sponsors — as a co-host on ABC's The View.

Ebert skips festival

Roger Ebert says he'll have to skip this year's Ebertfest film festival after breaking a hip.

The 65-year-old movie critic writes on his blog on the Chicago Sun-Times' Web site that his doctors have told him he should remain in a Chicago hospital rather than travel to Urbana-Champaign, Ill., for the 10th annual festival, which runs through Sunday.

Ebert is recovering from minor hip surgery following a recent fall. He's had a series of cancer-related surgeries the past few years.

And finally . . .

President Bush made a video appearance on Deal or No Deal Monday to root on an Army captain who ended up winning 80,000 bucks. It's the president's new policy on improving veterans' benefits. He puts them on game shows and wishes them luck.
