You've read the book; now meet the editor. And even if you haven't yet read the memoir A Time to Dance — The Life of Heinz Poll, you should stop by a reception to be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 2 at the University of Akron's Center for Dance and Theatre at Guzzetta Hall, 139 Buchtel Ave.
The memoir's editor, Barbara Schubert, will be featured in a program at 5:30 p.m.
A former administrator at Ohio Ballet and a longtime friend of Poll and his partner in art and life, Tom Skelton, Schubert had a particularly close perspective on the workings of the Ohio Ballet during its more than 30 years of existence.
Poll's memoir is full of tales from his early years in Germany that few of us had ever heard. I wouldn't be surprised if Schubert had a few more stories to tell that didn't make it into the book.
The reception is hosted by the UA Dance Program and University of Akron Press, which published the book. Copies will be available for purchase, or can be bought at http://www.uakron.edu/uapress. The event is free and open to the public.

Schedule changes
Ohio Light Opera made a couple of schedule changes after printing its brochure. L'Etoile opens July 16 at 2 p.m. (not July 12 as originally announced). Following that, the next performance of L'Etoile will be at 2 p.m. July 19.
The other change is a performance of The Cabaret Girl, which was switched from July 19 to July 12.
An article that ran on June 19 incorrectly said The Cabaret Girl closes on Aug. 9. It closes on Aug. 8. That one was my mistake.

Show extended
Actor's Summit Theatre has extended its run of Swingtime Canteen, a play about a group of American women giving a USO performance in World War II-era London. The show now runs through July 27. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets cost $22-$25. Call 330-342-0800 or visit http://www.actorssummit.org.
There's more on the docket for Actors' Summit. The professional theater company has partnered with Skywave Writers of Hudson for Porch Stories, a dip into Hudson's history. Skywave Writers researched the stories and wrote the narratives, which may include anything from a tale of a church scandal to a story about the Underground Railroad.
On July 12, volunteer guides will lead the participants on storytelling strolls through the village of Hudson. Tours will leave from Hudson's Clocktower Green every 15 minutes, beginning at 3 p.m. The final tour leaves at 8 p.m.
Tickets cost $12 for adults, $6 for students. Admission is free for kids under 6 with their parents. Call 330-342-0800.
Grants available
The County of Summit Regional Arts & Cultural District Board is taking grants applications and proposals for its Sept. 1 review deadline.
The organization was set up in 2006 to enhance the county's quality of life and promote economic development. In 2007, its 15-member bipartisan board began making grants to nonprofits and agencies.
Grants are available for activities in the performing and visual arts, as well as architecture, design and preservation. Two things to remember: organizations must be designated as 501(c)3 by the IRS, and the programs must have an element that's open to the public.
Last year, grants were given for concerts, educational materials and hands-on art activities for families. Grants are not made for general operating expenses or endowments.
This year, $30,000 in public funds is available to be distributed to selected organizations.
