Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have reached an
agreement that grants the
pop singer more visits
with her children
and averts a
custody trial
that was scheduled for next month, attorneys said Friday.

The agreement was announced after a closed session between lawyers for both sides and a Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner.

Spears' attorney, Laura Wasser, says the agreement will give Spears more time with her boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James. While Federline still has full custody, Wasser said, Spears may get expanded rights by the end of the year.

Spears lost custody last year after several high-profile incidents of erratic behavior.

Hayek's engagement off

Salma Hayek has called off her engagement to businessman Francois-Henri Pinault, her representative said Friday.

The couple announced plans to wed in March 2007, and welcomed a daughter, Valentina Paloma Pinault, several months later.

Hayek, 41, has starred in films such as Frida, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over and After the Sunset. She is one of the executive producers of ABC's Ugly Betty.

Pinault is chief executive of the luxury goods company PPR SA, which owns high-end labels such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Puma.

'Housewives' end in sight

The women of Wisteria Lane may have only a few more years to resolve their assorted problems.

Desperate Housewives creator and executive producer Marc Cherry told a meeting of the Television Critics Association on Thursday that he plans to end the ABC series after seven seasons.

The domestic comedy-drama starring Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria begins its fifth season this fall.

''I love working with these gals, but the idea of letting anyone else take the show from me kind of makes me sad and sick to my stomach,'' Cherry said. ''We're going to get out while people still like us.

''Of course, this could be some clever ruse on my part to get tremendous amounts of money in Season 8, but who knows?''

And finally . . .

This week Ralph Nader announced that he is certified to be on the presidential ballot in 12 states. However, doctors say that Nader is certifiable in all 50 states.
