Getaway to Ohio's State Parks

By Betty O'Neil-Roderick
Ohio.com

August is the perfect time to take the family on a getaway to one of Ohio's State Parks. Don't let summer slip away without a Family Getaway and enjoy hiking, canoeing, swimming or just relaxing by the pool in a beautiful natural outdoor setting.

Mohican State Park Resort offers a family Summer Pizza Package that includes one night of lodging, a large pizza, one movie rental, popcorn and a $10 retail coupon for beverages or other snacks. This special is available Sunday through Thursday, starting at $109. For more information and reservations visit www.mohicanresort.com.

Primitive camping is available along the Shawnee State Park's Backpacking Trail. Here you can camp just like the Indians did, and hike over 60 miles of trails through Ohio's last vestige of wilderness. For those who love to hike but prefer a bed at the end of the day, Shawnee offers a full service resort lodge and vacation cottages. For information visit www.shawneelodgeresort.com.

The fish are biting at Acton Lake at Hueston Woods State Park where the beautiful resort lodge features murals and artifacts of the Miami Indians who once occupied the land. For outdoor enthusiasts this state park offers a variety of programs on wildlife rehabilitation, and animal lovers can see recovering hawks, owls, bald eagles and many native animals. For more information visit www.huestonwoodsresort.com.

Hunt for treasures at Salt Fork State Park, where geocaching packages include a hand-held global positioning system and a map. Visitors search for treasures hidden around the park. For information visit www.saltforkresort.com.

Burr Oak Resort, Punderson Manor, and Maumee Bay also have year-round activities for families to enjoy. Guests can practice their strokes both inside and out, because all seven resorts feature golf courses at or near their properties as well as both indoor and outdoor pools. Golf packages combine greens fees with an overnight stay. All seven Ohio State Park Resorts are operated by Xanterra Parks & Resorts. For reservations call 800-282-7275 or visit www.atapark.com.
