As many as 1,400 bicyclists are expected for one of the largest family-oriented bicycling events in Northeast Ohio.
The STOMP 2008 Bicycle Adventure featuring three bicycle tours will be staged Saturday.
The rides will begin and end at Howe Meadow in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at 4040 Riverview Road, north of Ira Road in Cuyahoga Falls.
STOMP stands for Summit Tour of Metro Parks.
The event, first staged in 1993, is a fundraiser sponsored by Citizens for Metro Parks, and all proceeds will benefit Metro Parks, Serving Summit County.
The ride options are:
• A 63-miler with a few challenging hills for experienced riders. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. All riders must depart by 9 a.m. and should return by 3 p.m. Fee is $45 the day of the tour.
• A 25-miler covering a rolling route with a few hills. For experienced riders. Registration opens at 9 a.m. Riders must depart by 10:30 a.m. and should return by 2:30 p.m. Fee is $35.
• A 10-mile family ride along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Registration opens at 10:30 a.m. All riders should depart by noon and should complete the route by 2:30 p.m. Fee is $30.
For $10, you can just enjoy the music and food at Howe Meadow and not pedal anywhere.
STOMP will be held rain or shine.
All riders must wear helmets. The routes are clearly marked. Rest stops will be provided along the routes.
Youngsters under age 16 must be accompanied by adults.
Riders should be prepared to fix their own flat tires and do minor repairs.
Registration includes a light breakfast, snack stops and lunch that will be served at the end of the rides by Friends of Metro Parks.
There will be limited vehicle support.

Today
Contra dance — Everyone is invited to join in a contra dance with music by Strings and Things and caller Carol Kopp. The dance will be from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Boston Township School House at state Route 303 and Riverview Road in Peninsula. Instruction will be provided at 7 p.m. Admission is $6. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
Bees for kids — Mount Union College's John T. Huston-Dr. John B. Brumbaugh Nature Center will host a program about bees for preschoolers and accompanying adults at 10 a.m. The center is on Daniel Street off state Route 183 six miles south of Alliance in Washington Township. Nature Flats — Cleveland Metroparks is holding a tour looking at nature in the Flats industrial area. It will run from 10 a.m. to noon Call 216-206-1000 for reservations and information, including the meeting place.
Friday
Night bike ride — Century Cycle in Peninsula is organizing a night bike ride along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley. Bicyclists will pedal 15 to 20 miles. The ride will start at 8 p.m. Helmets and bike lights are required. Meet at the bike shop on state Route 303 next to the Cuyahoga River. Call 800-201-7433 for information.
Learn about geocaching — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources are presenting a program about geocaching by Dave Herpy of the Kent State University Adventure Center. The program will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Michael J. Kirwan Dam and Reservoir's Visitor Center off Wayland Road east of Ravenna in Paris Township. Call 330-358-2370 for information.
Park concert — Crookneck Chandler and the Tibbee Bottom Boys will perform at 8 p.m. at Cleveland Metroparks' CanalWay Center. That's off East 49th Street south of Grant Avenue in Cuyahoga Heights. The show will be moved indoors if it rains. Call 216-206-1000 for information.
Saturday
Evening beaver hike — The National Park Service is staging a beaver hike from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley. Meet at the Ira Trailhead off Riverview Road north of Ira Road in Cuyahoga Falls.
Favorite places — The Cuyahoga Valley park's M.D. Garage will host an exhibit of favorite places by the Crooked River Gang, a group of local painters, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The garage is off Boston Mills Road east of the Cuyahoga River in the hamlet of Boston.
Hampton Hills hike — The Portage Trail Walkers hiking club will meet at 9 a.m. at Hampton Hills Metro Park for hikes of 3.2 miles or 4.8 miles. Meet in the parking lot off Akron-Peninsula Road north of West Bath Road in Akron. Call 330-673-6896 for information.
Learn about comet — The Astronomy Club of Akron is presenting a program about comets at 8 p.m. at the club's observatory at Portage Lakes State Park. That's at 5031 Manchester Road (state Route 93), New Franklin. Call 330-837-5848 for information.
Migrating monarchs — Cleveland Metroparks is sponsoring Family Fun Days with a look at migrating monarch butterflies. It will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Brecksville Nature Center off Chippewa Creek Drive in Brecksville. Advance registration is required. Call 440-526-1012 for reservations and information.
Sunday
Old Carriage hike — The National Park Service is sponsoring a moderately difficult hike of 51/4 miles on the Old Carriage Trail from 2 to 5 p.m. Meet at the Red Lock Trailhead off West Highland Road in Sagamore Hills Township.
Nature walk — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, is sponsoring a nature walk at 3 p.m. along the 3.2-mile Adam Run Trail at Hampton Hills Metro Park. Meet in the parking lot off Akron-Peninsula Road north of West Bath Road in Akron. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Park concert — Acoustic musician Steve Madewell will present a free outdoor concert at 5:30 p.m. at the Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road, Akron. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. The concert will be moved indoors if it rains. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Preparing for winter — Quail Hollow State Park near Hartville will present a program on how Mother Nature prepares for winter. It will be at 2 p.m. Meet at the park's Carriage House Nature Center. The park is at 13480 Congress Lake Road N.E., Lake Township. Call 330-877-6652 for information.
Portage Lakes rowing — The Portage Lakes Rowing Association will be rowing from 7 to 9 a.m. The rowers will also be out from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The rowing continues until Nov. 16. For information, call 330-807-4010 or check out http://www.portagelakesrowing.com.

Tuesday
Stark pedal tour — The Stark County Park District is holding a bicycle ride along the Nickel Plate Trail in Louisville from 6 to 8 p.m. Call 330-477-3552 for reservations and information.
Wednesday
Chuckery hike — The Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Chuckery Area of Cascade Valley Metro Park. That's off Cuyahoga Street in North Akron. It will be a five-mile hike. Call 330-733-3995 for information.
Wilderness walk — The Wilderness Center off U.S. 250 near Wilmot is sponsoring a naturalist-led walk at 10 a.m. Call 330-359-5235 for information.
Backpack meeting — Cleveland Metroparks' Institute of the Great Outdoors will hold a mandatory meeting for a backpacking trip along 20 miles of the Buckeye Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Brecksville Nature Center off Chippewa Creek Drive in Brecksville. The trip will be Sept. 26-28. There will be additional meetings on Sept. 17 and Sept. 24. The trip is for ages 18 and older. The fee is $85 a person. Participants will return via the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
